Crockpot Baked Potatoes

Who doesn’t love a great baked potato? I know my family does. And what’s the easiest way to make them? In the CROCKPOT! Plop those spuds in the trusty crockpot before you leave for work, and come home to warm, creamy, super yummy baked potatoes.

I know some of you are thinking, “isn’t microwaving a potato faster?” Well, yes but the slow and low cooking method of the crockpot leaves you with a creamier, potato.

How to Make Crockpot Baked Potatoes

  1. First, wash potatoes. Pierce each potato a couple times with a fork.
  2. Wrap each in a piece of foil (Optional: if using butter, place about 1/2 TB butter in foil packed)
  3. Place in crockpot and cook of LOW for 7-8 hours. (If you have smaller potatoes, aim for the 7 hours, super large potatoes, 8 hours. You can also do HIGH setting for 4.5-5 hours)

How to Make Crockpot Baked Potatoes

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 6 hours

Ingredients
 

  • Russet potatoes or as many as you would like to serve I did 6
  • 3 TBSP butter cut into 6 pieces

Instructions

  • First, wash potatoes. Pierce each potato a couple times with a fork.

  1. What a great idea! I don’t use a microwave because I believe they change the food, making it less than healthy. A crockpot would be so energy efficient, too. I’m curious … do you think this would work if one didn’t use the foil but just put the potatoes in the crockpot? We top our baked potatoes with a little salt … that’s it. I love the pure flavor of potato. Thanks for sharing this idea!

    1. I have never tried them that way. I think the foil keeps a lot of the moisture in. But with that said, there is a lid of the crockpot, so it might just work 🙂 XO

    2. I put my potatoes in the crockpot, salt them, then cover with foil before putting the lid on. It seems to help keep them moist.

    3. Yes, you can put the potatoes straight in the crockpot after washing them without the foil. I do that with sweet potatoes and just putting the lid on the crockpot keeps them moist. Check after a few hours though to make certain they aren’t too dry. I’ve only ever had to sprinkle them with a little water once through cooking because I did it on high after getting a late start.

  3. When our baked potatoes are done we scoop them out and mash with a fork and then add butter, some salt & pepper, grated Cheddar cheese and some sour cream. We put the potatoes back in the skins and then we have a baked potato bar with toppings such as bacon bits, sour cream, grated cheese, green onions or chives, salsa and gucamole. Everyone gets to fix their own with what they like best.

  5. So do you put it only in tin foil with no water at all in the crock pot?

    1. I had the same question Karin! Every site I see does not include adding water, so I will try without it & just keep a close eye on them 🙂

    Just had a thought pop into my head while reading the comments. Since so many like broccoli, why not try a layered meal in the pot? I like to rb my tatoes with olive oil and salt before wrapping them, you could then wrap some broccoli in foil with whatever seasonings and place on top of the potatoes

    1. Great idea Tina! I think the long cooking time might make it mushy though?? Or would the foil and being on top keep it ok?

  7. I have done a whole meal in the crock pot. Put meat on bottom (I have done pork and I have done steak) then put wrapped baking potatoes on top. I have also heard of people adding corn cobs on top of all of that. Cook on low all day and dinner is done! Yum!

  8. I have been doing this for a long time, but have never covered with foil, mine have not dried out.

  9. As I was reading these comments I thought why couldn’t you use a rack in bottom of the “crackpot /slowcooker & set the potatoes on the rack? Wouldn’t that create something akin to an oven? That’s probably what wrapping the potatoes in foil does also.
