Can I use fresh green beans instead of canned?

Yes, fresh green beans can be used in this recipe. For best results, trim the ends and blanch them in boiling water for about 5 minutes before shocking them in an ice bath. This will keep the beans vibrant and tender. Drain them well before using.

What if I don’t have a 9×13 baking dish?

Any large baking dish or large skillet that can hold the green bean mixture will work. Just ensure it’s oven-safe if you’re planning to bake the casserole.

Can I prepare this green bean casserole ahead of time?

Absolutely! Assemble the casserole but hold off on baking it. Cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator. Before serving, bake it as directed, possibly adding a few extra minutes to compensate for starting from a cold state.

Are there any substitutions for soy sauce?

If soy sauce isn’t available, you can use tamari or a bit of chicken broth with a pinch of salt for a similar umami flavor profile.

How can I store leftovers?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in a microwave or in the oven until heated through.

  • For a homemade touch: Consider adding a layer of crispy fried onions or homemade crispy onions on top for the last 5 minutes of baking to add a delightful crunch.
  • Enhance the flavor: If you’re looking for a richer flavor, consider sautéing some button mushrooms in a large skillet over medium heat and adding them to the green bean mixture.
  • Creamy variant: To transform this into a favorite green bean casserole with a creamy twist, mix in a can of cream of mushroom soup before baking. This will make the casserole creamier and is perfect for the holiday table.
  • Boosting texture: Instead of melting the butter, try browning it in a skillet over medium-high heat until golden brown before mixing with the other ingredients. This will add a nutty flavor to the dish.
  • Keeping things crispy: If you prefer the bacon to remain crispy, consider adding it to the casserole during the last 10 minutes of baking instead of mixing it in with the green beans from the start.

My favorite go to side dish, yummy and easy

    2. Very good, but! I would leave the salt out. Bacon, garlic salt, soy sauce is pretty salty right there. Maybe even substitute garlic for garlic salt. Quick easy and good though

  1. I would like to know how the brown sugar and soy sauce works together. Im afraid of ruining that much food if it’s sweet.

    1. I know it sounds like a crazy combo!!! But trust me, it’s amazing!!

    2. The salty concentration of the soy sauce off sets the sweetness of the brown sugar.

    3. Carolyn Tidd says:

It’s a wonderful recipe. Big hit with everyone. I make a double batch, sticking to the exact recipe but doubled, and after baking dump it into a big crock pot to keep it hot for big office luncheon. So good!

    4. Barbara Pierce says:

The only way this is gluten free is if you use gluten free Soy Sauce. Soy Sauce in itself is NOT gluten free. Having said that, this recipe sounds delicious

    5. We use Tamari. It is a gluten free soy sauce

    6. I used Liquid Aminos from Bragg. It’s gluten free. 😀

this is so yummy. this year were doing them for thanks giving instead of the old ones with cream of mushrooms

  2. Do you think this could be just as good in the crockpot?

    1. That’s what I was thinking! It would be much easier to take a crockpot to my parents house and that way it would stay warm too. I’m going to try it.

  3. 5 stars
I made these green beans this afternoon to take to my brother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner tonight. I just covered the glass casserole dish with Glad Press n’ Seal to transport and just before it was time to eat, popped it into the microwave for 5 minutes to reheat. I was also a little concerned about the combination of soy sauce and brown sugar but they end up with a wonderful smokey flavor. Let me tell you, everyone loved them and could not stop raving about them! This recipe is a definite keeper.

    1. I still didn’t see a reply as to weather they could be made in a crockpot or not. I have to many things going in the oven
and don’t know when I would be able to put them in it. Please reply and let me know on this. Would you put it on high and for how long? Thanks for the recipe it looks so good and want to try it for Christmas.

    2. Sharon ,I have not made this in the crockpot, but since you are just warming it to blend the flavors, I would suggest cooking on LOW for 3-4 hours. Let us know if you give it a try!

    3. Carolyn Tidd says:

Bake it first then put it in crock pot. I have done this several times and it works great! Much easier for family style dinners and the beans stay warm!

  4. I did this recipe in the crockpot yesterday. The casserole was good, but the bacon was lacking in flavor and went from crispy to soggy. I think the next time I make this recipe, I’ll just warm it in the over instead of the crockpot. Hope this helps! 🙂
