Sonic Cherry Limeade

Sonic Cherry Limeade -- Family Fresh Meals

Sonic drive-in restaurants are a real blast from the past. This place has been around since the 1950s, and it feels like it never left. You drive up in your car, order through an intercom, and get your meal brought out by a carhop. A real carhop, in 2019!

Sonic’s menu is mostly straight out of the 1950s, too, with all the classic greasy-spoon fare: cheeseburgers, fries, onion rings, and shakes. But of all the items on the menu, the one that has really stolen my heart is the cherry limeade. Brilliant red, ice-cold, with the perfect balance of tart lime and sweet cherry juice, it’s like a big glass of nostalgia.

I just had to figure out a way to make this at home.

Sonic Cherry Limeade - Family Fresh Meals

So I got a jar of maraschino cherries with juice, a few limes, and some cold Sprite, and started experimenting. And after a little trial and error, I hit on just the right mixture of tart and sweet, icy and fizzy.

With a glass of this in your hand, you can skip the drive-in and cruise on out to your own back yard, instead.

How to Make Sonic Cherry Limeade

  1. Start by slicing your limes up into halves, then take each half and halve them again. Leaving you with 4 slices per lime.
  2. Your cherry limeade will start with squeezing and then placing a slice of lime at the bottom of your cup and 1,2 or 3 cherries at the bottom. If you are a cherry lover, the more the better!Sonic Cherry Limeade ingredients on cutting board - sprite, limes, cherries
  3. Fill your cup with as much ice as you would like, I find that crushed ice feels more like the iconic Sonic drink.
  4. Then, open a can of Sprite and fill your cup. This is where you will add your cherry juice, and the amount will depend on the size of your cup. If you are using a smaller cup, start with 2 tbsp of maraschino cherry juice. If your cup is on the larger side, you may need 4 tbsp of juice. A quick stir and sip of your drink will let you know when you’ve reached the perfect amount.Sonic Cherry Limeade - drink in a pitcher
  5. Squeeze a slice of lime into the drink and carefully stir everything up. Garnish with a slice of lime and a couple of cherries.
