How to Make Whole Wheat Grilled Pizza

The day I made the crust, it was a beautiful day out and my big beautiful grill was calling my name. For the longest time, I have wanted to try grilling a pizza. All I can say is WOW! The  grilled pizza turn out great with this crust, and it was amazingly easy. Why did I wait so long to grill pizzas!

To be honest, the idea of grilling dough always scared me. I envisioned it being a big mess and the dough just falling through the grates. But that was not the case at all.

And the tastes is to die for! So hurry up and give this bad boy a try before grilling season is over.

How to Make Whole Wheat Grilled Pizza

    1. Knead all the ingredients together. I am lucky enough to have a sweet blender that has a dough hook and dough mixing setting 🙂 Put under saran wrap and let sit for about 20 minutes.dough in a glass bowl, covered with saran wrap
    2. Heat grill to medium/high while you roll out your dough.whole wheat dough rolled out on a cutting board
    3. Oil up your grates to prevent any sticking. Lay dough out on oiled grates.laying dough on oiled grill
    4. I divided out dough in to a papa bear, mama bear and baby bear servings 😉 Close lid and let cook for about 2 minutes.
    5. In the meantime, get toppings ready. Pizza sauce, cheese, ect… After the 2 minutes are up, check on dough. It should be puffing up and have slight grill marks on the underside. If this hasn’t happened yet, close lid and continue to check on it every minute.dough cooking on a grill
    6. Once your dough is puffing up and have slight grill marks on the underside, remove from grill. You want to put our toppings on the side that has the grill marks (the side that was facing the flame)
    7. Papa Bear– Cheese & green olives,  Mama Bear – Goat cheese & artichoke hearts, Baby Bears 1 & 2 – Cheese, green olives & pepperoni!pizza sauce, cheese and topping add to the top of the dough on the grill
    8. Place pizzas back on the grill and cook until cheese has melted. I would check every 2-3 minutes, and do some shuffling of the pizzas so no burning occurs. Depending on your grill, you might need to turn down your grill a tad. Just keep you are eye on it 🙂 Our pizzas took about 6 minutes on this side ( so a total of 8-9) minutes.

Total Time 29 minutes

Ingredients
 

  • - 1.5 cups of whole what flour
  • - 3/4 cup of warm water
  • - 1.5 tsp of rapid rise yeast
  • - 1/2 tsp of Italian seasoning totally optional. I made it with and without... both was are yum.... just added some fun flavor to the dough

Instructions

  • Knead all the ingredients together.
  • Put under saran wrap and let sit for about 20 minutes.

  • Lay dough out on oiled grates.
  • Close lid and let cook for about 2 minutes.

    I have given up refined grains but needed to satisfy my Friday night pizza craving and not heat up the house. This recipe is perfect! I tried it side-by-side next to one that was not specifically for the grill and the other failed miserably. But we ate all of this! Make two batches if you are feeding a larger family. But the whole wheat makes it so that you don’t have to eat as much as you would of a normal pizza to feel full.

    i’m sorry but this recipe was terrible. it was so sticky there was no way it could be handled. i ended up adding probably a cup or more of flour, a tablespoon at a time. then the dough was not elastic at all and just fell apart in places. i’ll look for a different recipe next time I make grilled pizza.

    1. Sorry to hear you didn’t like the recipe Mindy. Yes, if you add too much flour to the dough, it will not work out well at all. Depending on the temp and the humidity, all dough can get sticky. If dough is sticky, what I like to do is rub my hands on olive oil while working with the dough to prevent any sticking 🙂
