How to make classic stuffing in the slow cooker.

Thanksgiving dinner is probably my favorite meal of the year. Having a big table just covered with good food, and my whole family gathered around it, makes my heart happy.

The hard part? Getting that meal onto the table. There are so many things to prepare at once – turkey, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, veggies, cranberries, pies – and only one stove and one oven to cook it all. Answer: The Crockpot to the rescue! If you make the stuffing in there, you can just get it started and let it cook on its own all day. This leaves the oven free for the bird and gives you one less dish to juggle.

I’ve already made one Crockpot stuffing recipe, but that one was a hearty stuffing with sausage and mushrooms in it. This Easy Crockpot Stuffing is a much simpler classic bread stuffing. Basically, it’s just cubes of well-seasoned bread, with chicken broth to moisten it and eggs to firm it up. It’s stuffing reduced to its most essential form.


Recipe Tips

Is it really necessary to dry out or bake the bread ahead of time for stuffing?

Absolutely, if you want your stuffing to have the right texture. If there’s too much moisture left in the bread, it will be chewy and tough. If you don’t have time for this extra step, see if you can buy day-old bread from the bakery.

Could you make this with all white bread or all wheat, instead of half of each?

Any kind of bread should work, as long as it’s nice and dry.

If  the stuffing done before the bird, can you leave it in the Crockpot until the rest of the meal is ready?

No problem! Just set your Crockpot on the “warm” setting until dinner is served.

If you make this in the Crockpot instead of actually stuffing it in a bird, is it really stuffing?

If you want to get technical, it’s “dressing.” But if you call it that it sounds like you’re talking about a salad dressing. Just go ahead and say stuffing – everyone knows what that means.

Easy Crockpot Stuffing

Directions:
NOTE: Picking your bread for your stuffing can be as basic or as specific as you’d like. I kept it simple and just went with a white sandwich bread and a wheat sandwich bread. I cubed it 24 hours before I was ready to make my stuffing and just let it dry out on the counter. You could also cube it and bake it at 300 degrees for 10-20 minutes, but make sure it doesn’t brown or toast.

  1. Start by melting your butter in a skillet and then add in your onions, celery and all of your seasonings. Cook until softens, but not browned.   3. Now you are going to add your broth. NOTE: Too much leads to a very wet stuffing, too little and it will be dry. You just want your bread moist. If you do add too much, it’s okay just add more bread. For the sandwich bread I picked, I barely needed 2 cups of broth. Easy Crockpot Stuffing

This Easy Crockpot Stuffing recipe is one of my favorite, classic Thanksgiving recipes. It's easy to make and will stay warm in the slow cooker until you are ready to serve.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 4 hours

Ingredients
 

  • 1 cup of unsalted butter
  • 2 cups of chopped celery
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/4 cup of chopped parsley
  • 6 cups of white bread cubes see note
  • 6 cups of wheat bread cubes see note
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of poultry seasoning
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried sage
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried rosemary
  • 1/4 teaspoon of dried marjoram
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pepper
  • 2-3 cups of chicken broth
  • 2 eggs beaten

    I have family members with Celiac. Would this work with gluten-free bread?

    1. I have only tested the recipe as written, but I would have to guess that gluten free bread would work out just fine.

      1. Hi there. Is 6 cups of cubes bread a whole loaf of standard bread?

        1. It really depends on the size loaf you are using Lindsey. It is best to measure it out.
