One Pot Steak and Potatoes

Here’s a fun little quiz: If you were entertaining a guest from a foreign country and you wanted to show them American cuisine at its best, what would you serve?

If I had to choose, I’d probably say the best all-American dish is a perfectly grilled steak, served up with baked or fried potatoes. It’s a simple meal that gets all its flavor from good ingredients and skillful cooking, not fancy sauces or spices.

However, to really impress your imaginary guest, your steak would need to be perfectly cooked. And that’s not so easy to do. Cooking a whole steak so that it’s nicely seared on the outside but still tender and juicy in the middle is a lot trickier than it looks.One Pot Steak and Potato Bites in a white bowl

Fortunately, I’ve come up with a shortcut that makes it much easier — and quicker. Cut that steak into one-inch cubes, and you can put more of the meat in contact with the heat, so it cooks to perfection in a pan in a matter of minutes. And better still, you can fry your potatoes in the same pan — dressed up with a bit of ranch seasoning — for a simple one-pot meal.

What cut of steak should I use for this dish?

  • I made it with sirloin, but it should also work with strip steak, Porterhouse, or even T-bone.

I like my steak rare. Can I cook it that way in this dish?

  • Not really. With the meat in such small pieces, by the time the outside is done to a nice golden-brown, the inside is cooked too. So it’s more like medium-well. But as long as it’s a good cut of meat, it will still be nice and tender.

What kind of vegetable would you serve with this?

  • Since the main course is so simple, you could pair it with a slightly fancier veggie dish, like my Bacon Wrapped Green Bean Bundles or Honey Bacon Brussels Sprouts. But it would also taste fine with some basic steamed green beans or broccoli, dressed with butter and maybe just a squeeze of lemon, or with a green salad.

How to Make One Pot Steak and Potatoes

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and add olive oil and 2 tablespoons of butter, potatoes, ranch seasoning packet. Stir mixture, cover and cook stirring occasionally until potatoes are fork tender (about 15 minutes depending on side of potatoes) Remove and set aside on a plate.
  2. Turn up the skillet to high heat. Add the 1 tablespoon butter and steak. Season steak well with salt and pepper. Sear the steak pieces until they are golden brown.
  3. When steak is finished to the desired temperature, combine potatoes and steak bites.

This One Pot Steak and Potatoes recipe is the perfect all American meal in minutes. Best of all, it can all be made in one pot.

Cook Time 30 minutes

Ingredients
 

  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter divided
  • 1 pound yukon gold potatoes sliced into wedges
  • 1 ranch dressing packet
  • 1 1/4 pounds sirloin steaks cut into 1 inch cubes
  • salt and pepper
  • Garnish: chopped parsley

Instructions

    I would love to try this but cannot use the Ranch dressing due to lactose-intolerance. Do you have any other suggestions to replace it? Thanx

    1. I think Italian dressing seasoning would be yummy with this.

  2. This looks like a really nice quick dinner. If the pieces of steak were cut bigger you could probably get less well cooked meat?
