The Glorious Fourth is just around the corner, and it’s going to be extra glorious this year. I can’t wait for all the decorations, fireworks, and of course, an extra-special holiday menu. July is a great time for making red-white-and-blue desserts, since both blueberries and red strawberries are in season. All you have to do is add something white, like angel food cake, cream cheese, whipped cream – or all three.

And that’s exactly what I did in this July 4th Angel Food Cake Trifle. Colorful, flavorful layers of cubed angel cake, sliced strawberries, ripe blueberries, and a sweet, fluffy whipped topping made from cream and cream cheese whipped together. It’s sweetened with both sugar and honey, with a touch of lime juice and zest to give it an extra kick.

How to Make July 4th Angel Food Cake Trifle

  1. In a large bowl, use a mixer to beat the cream cheese until fluffy, about 1 minute.cream cheese whipped in a mixing bowl

  3. Remove the whipped cream cheese mixture from the mixer and place into a bowl to set aside for now.cream cheese filling in mixing bowl
  4. To assemble the trifles, use 3 (8 ounce) mason jars.

How do I store this Angel Food Cake Trifle?

  • You can store this in the refrigerator for up to 3 days if your trifle is properly covered. I would close it with the mason jar lid so that it is in an airtight container. It does not freeze well.

What is a trifle?

  • A trifle is a layered dessert that usually consists of fruit, a cream, and a type of cake or biscuit. It originated in England, though the American version tends to be simpler. Trifles are meant to be simple, as they derive from the French word “trufle” which means “of little importance.” Therefore, trifles are meant to be quick and easy desserts. But despite being simple to put together, they are very delicious! 

Can I change the way I make the trifle? Can I add anything else?

  • You can personalize this trifle in the assembly if you like. You can add more layers or change the way you make the layers.
  • Starting with a cake layer is a good idea because it will soak up any liquids from the berries and cream.
  • You can add another cake layer if you want more cake or include a layer of a different red or blue fruits if you’d like more variety in the fruit. If you don’t have mason jars you can use other see-through containers (disposable cups make clean up easy!).

Ingredients
 

  • 4 ounces ½ of an 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 ½ cups cold heavy cream
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 Tablespoon lime juice about ½ a lime
  • 1 teaspoon lime zest optional
  • 5 cups premade Angel Food Cake cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries stems removed and sliced
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, use a mixer to beat the cream cheese until fluffy, about 1 minute.
  • Add in the heavy cream, powdered sugar, honey, lime juice, and lime zest (optional) and beat on medium speed until stiff peaks are formed, about 2-5 minutes.
  • Remove the whipped cream cheese mixture from the mixer and place into a bowl to set aside for now.
  • To assemble the trifles, use 3 (8 ounce) mason jars.
