Crockpot Cubed Steak

There are times when I like to get creative in the kitchen. To play with different cuisines, explore new flavors, try new ingredients. To develop an exciting new recipe like Instant Pot Honey Garlic Chicken or Easy Fiesta Taco Pizza.Crockpot Cubed Steak on a plate with peas and potatoes

But then there are other times when all I really crave is good, simple comfort food. Something warm and filling, with tender meat in a nice, rich gravy, served over a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes with a simple veggie on the side.

Those are the times when this Crockpot Cubed Steak recipe really hits the spot. It starts out with lightly seasoned cubed steak, breaded and browned in oil until it’s crispy and golden brown. Then those nicely crisp pieces go into the bottom of the slow cooker with canned beef broth, canned French onion soup, diced tomatoes, and a packet of au just gravy mix, plus just a couple of shakes of Worcestershire sauce, and they simmer away in that savory mixture all day.Crockpot Cubed Steak on a plate with peas and potatoes

By dinnertime, your steak is magnificently tender, swimming in that flavorful gravy, and ready to ladle over a nice batch of mashed potatoes. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s tasty, warm, and incredibly comforting.

Recipe Tips:

  • Browning the steak can be skipped in a pinch but it REALLY helps seal in the flavors and helps the steak keep a bit of texture.
  • If you want to thicken the gravy, mix together 2 tablespoons cold water and 2 tablespoons flour and add to crockpot about 30 minutes before serving.
  • This gravy uses a can of tomatoes, but does NOT taste like tomatoes. It just kind of helps add a depth to the sauce.

What is cubed steak?

  • Cubed steak is beef — usually top round or top sirloin — that’s been pounded out with a meat tenderizer or put through an electric tenderizer. It’s called that because it comes out with these little cube-shaped indentations in the surface. Just ask for it at the meat counter, and they’ll know what to give you.

Can I cook this dish in less time on the high setting?

  • Not in this case. It really needs a long, slow simmering to get that meat good and tender. But it’s worth waiting for!

Besides mashed potatoes, what else is good with this dish?

  • It would also be great served over noodles. And any simple veggie, like peas or beans, goes well on the side.

Could I use a scan of crushed tomatoes instead of diced? Recipes sounds delicious!!!

    1. Yes! Crushed tomatoes will work out great. I hope you love it Janet 🙂

When you say “1 can French Onion soup” what exactly do you mean? Condensed? The “do not add water” kind? How many ounces? This sounds wonderful and I can’t wait to try it!

    1. 10.5 oz of condensed French Onion Soup (like Campbell’s)

  3. Hi, can I double this? 3 pounds of cubed steak and rest of ingredients?

    1. Yes, I think that would work out just fine. You might need to add on a little bit of cooking time
