Air Fryer Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp
Ditch the traditional pan-frying option when it comes to cooking irresistible Hawaiian garlic shrimp and make use of the air fryer.
This Air Fryer Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp recipe is an incredibly quick, easy, and no-fuss method of achieving super tender shrimp that you can either enjoy as an appetizer with dipping sauce or serve as a main meal alongside rice and lemon wedges.
WHAT IS HAWAIIAN GARLIC SHRIMP?
- Hawaiian garlic shrimp is another classic Hawaiian dish that you can easily make in the comfort of your kitchen.
- This dish is centered around shell-on shrimp that has been tossed with spices and cornstarch and then coated in a gorgeous garlic butter sauce. I’ve opted to use peeled and deveined shrimp for this recipe although some recipes do use shell-on shrimps.
- Hawaiian garlic shrimp is usually served with lemon wedges and perfectly cooked rice!
CAN I MAKE THIS ON THE STOVE IF I DON’T HAVE AN AIR FRYER?
- Yes! This dish has for the most part in previous years been made on the stove top, considering air fryer machines are recent kitchen appliance inventions!
- If you do opt to make this dish on your stove, simply follow these steps:
- Make the garlic sauce – Add the butter into a pan and wait for it to melt over a medium heat. Once it’s melted, add the garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes until the garlic turns a golden brown. Pour the sauce into a bowl and set it aside until the shrimps have been cooked.
- Cook the shrimp – Melt some butter in a large frying pan and fry the shrimp. The frying time will differ in the frying pan compared to an air fryer so be watchful and rather start in smaller batches if you are unsure.
- Assemble – once the shrimp is cooked and ready, pour the garlic sauce over the fried shrimps. Toss the shrimps in the sauce until you feel like all of them have been evenly coated in the garlic sauce, and presto! You’ve just cooked this dish completely on the stove top.
TIPS FOR MAKING AIR FRYER HAWAIIAN GARLIC SHRIMP
- Allow for sufficient space between the shrimps in the air fryer basket. That way they will cook more evenly and get a good crispy outer edge.
- Drying the shrimp helps when it comes to producing crispy fried shrimps. Blotting the shrimp with a paper towel helps to absorb as much moisture as possible so I don’t suggest skipping this step.
- Flipping the shrimp half way through the cooking time will ensure that each piece of shrimp cooks and crisps on both sides.
- You can use air fryer liners when frying the shrimp which will make the cleanup that much easier!
How to Make Air Fryer Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp
- Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees F (if your air fryer needs to preheat).
- Combine the cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, salt, and dried basil in a small mixing bowl.
- Blot the shrimp dry with a paper towel and then place the shrimp in a gallon sized bag along with the cornstarch mixture. Toss the shrimp until it is coated thoroughly.
- Place the shrimp in the air fryer basket in a single layer. You may need to cook in batches. Spray the shrimp generously with cooking spray. Cook at 390 degrees F for 6-8 minutes, turning halfway through. Spray the shrimp with another layer of cooking spray after they have been flipped. The shrimp should be pink and tightly curled.
- While the shrimp is cooking, make the garlic butter sauce by stirring together the melted butter, minced garlic, and lemon juice together.
Place the shrimp in a large bowl and stir in the garlic butter until combined. - You can choose to enjoy it at this stage, or you can thicken the sauce by adding the shrimp and sauce to a skillet over medium-high heat and cook for 2-3 minutes or until the sauce is thickened. This is a completely optional step.
- Remove from the skillet or air fryer and serve with a side of rice. Top with chopped parsley and a lemon wedge, optional.
