TIPS FOR MAKING BANANA SPLIT DUMP CAKE

  • It’s always going to be easier to cut your butter into squares if it’s cold. When the dump cake cooks, the butter will melt and blend into the dry cake mix but it probably won’t spread evenly, leaving some areas of the cake mix layer uncovered. If you want to avoid this then rather melt your butter and drizzle it over the dry cake mix for ample coverage.
  • Feel free to make your own pie filling for this dump cake instead of purchasing a canned pie filling.
  • While you can leave this dump cake at room temperature, if you are experiencing hot weather, rather store it in the refrigerator.
  • This cake works best when you save the toppings for individual servings unless you are planning to serve the entire cake to a crowd. The sliced fruit won’t  keep as long and the whipped cream and chocolate syrup will make the cake soggy as it sits. Keep the toppings off the cake until it is dished out. You can even place the toppings in bowls and let others top their own cake!
  • Crushed pineapple– I prefer the way the crushed pineapple blends into the strawberry pie filling but you can easily substitute with an equal amount of pineapple tidbits or pineapple chunks in juice as well.
  •  Water– this helps to thin out the pie filling a bit so the cake cooks more evenly. Feel free to substitute with pineapple juice if you’d like a bit more pineapple flavor.
  •  Cake mix– white cake mix lends a vanilla flavor to the recipe that mimics an ice cream flavor. I prefer using white cake mix in this recipe for the most banana split-like flavor, but you can absolutely substitute with a chocolate or strawberry cake mix or whatever suits your tastes. Use a gluten-free cake mix to make this recipe gluten-free but be aware that you may need to increase the baking time.

WHAT IS DUMP CAKE?

  • Dump cake is exactly how it sounds. There’s no fancy techniques or processes required in making this cake. Simply “dump” all of the ingredients into an oven-safe dish and set your oven to bake!
  • A dump cake is one of the easiest types of desserts to whip up, and can also be adapted to suit individual preferences.

HOW SHOULD I STORE BANANA SPLIT DUMP CAKE?

  • This dump cake can be stored in an airtight container or in its baking dish, covered with plastic wrap, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • You can also store this cake at room temperature for up to 3 days, granted that it sits in a cool, dry area. For this reason, it’s a great cake to make the night before, leaving it to sit out overnight without any issues.
  • If you would like to freeze this dump cake, I suggest that you only freeze the actual dump cake and not any cake that has already been garnished with banana split toppings since these will definitely spoil.
