Turn your favorite French soup into a whole meal.
I have kind of a love-hate relationship with French onion soup. I love it because it’s absolutely delicious, with rich broth, browned onions, and golden, melted cheese, all soaking into a piece of good peasant bread. But I kind of hate it because I’m not sure how to make it part of a meal. This rich soup is much too filling to eat before the main course – but if you serve it as the main course, it’s not quite filling enough.
What I really wanted was a way to turn French onion soup into a complete meal. So, since I’m a cook, I decided to go ahead and make one up.
This Crockpot French Onion Chicken has all the fabulous flavor of a good French onion soup –beef broth, red wine, onions, thyme, and melted Gruyere cheese (or Swiss if you want to stretch your budget a bit). But they’re combined with slices of tender chicken breast to make a more substantial dish. And making it is as easy as layering everything in the Crockpot and turning it on.
With this recipe, you can enjoy your favorite French soup and your main course, all in one.
Crockpot French Onion Chicken
- Place sliced onions in the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Add beef broth and wine and stir to combine.
- Season chicken breasts with thyme, salt, and pepper. Place the chicken in a single layer on top of the onions. Cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours.
- When the time is up top the chicken with freshly shredded cheese and place the lid back on the slow cooker. Allow about 30 minutes for the cheese to melt. Enjoy!
NOTE:
* For a more budget friendly option, swiss cheese can be used in place of gruyere. The taste will be very similar
*Slicing the chicken into serving sizes before you cook rather than after helps to make sure that each serving has the right amount of flavor and seasoning.

Looks amazing! I wanted to make this over the weekend in my slow cooker but now I’m pressed for time to make it after work. Any ideas about doing this in the Instant Pot?
Kristine says
It was really easy to prep and make which was nice. Flavor was pretty good. I was a little confused how to eat it. It was really really watery. The pictures looked like I should plate the dish but it was so watery that maybe it was supposed to be a soup and chicken or I should have shredded the chicken to make a soup. I am not sure
Corey says
You will want to pull the chicken out and plate it. We love ours with rice and pasta 🙂
Lauren Storer says
Can I do this with chicken thighs?
Corey says
Yes! Chicken thighs are delish with this recipe.

Is there something else I can use instead of wine? This looks amazing!
Corey says
You could skip the wine and just add in a little balsamic vinegar
Becky says
Could I put my chicken in frozen? If so, how much time would I need to cook for?

Whenever I’m at a loss as to what to make for dinner I go to this recipe, since I always have the ingredients on hand. I like to serve this chicken w/an easy side of pasta OR rice, & a huge salad. Thanks 😍
