With this wonderful, warm spring we’ve been having, I’ve been thinking we might fire up the grill a little bit early this year. So I’m thinking ahead to summer cookouts – meat and veggies sizzling over the fire, salads on the side, and a bunch of friends gathered on the deck, sipping sangria.

And then I thought, well, the grill may have to wait a little longer, but the sangria sure doesn’t!

So I decided to start experimenting. A basic sangria is made with red wine, fruit, and sugar syrup, with a touch of club soda to stretch it out. But I was going for something less basic – something lighter and more summery.

First I looked at the fruit. Oranges, lemons, and limes all go well with sangria, so I thought, why not grapefruit? That would give it a whole new kick, with tart and bitter flavors to offset the sweetness of the wine.

But I realized grapefruit wouldn’t taste right at all with red wine, so I decided to try it with a white wine instead – like a sweet, fruity Riesling. That went beautifully with the grapefruit, but it still needed more, so I added orange and lime as well, and for a final flavor boost, I tossed in some fresh mint leaves.

Topped up with sugar syrup and club soda, this is a lighter, crisper sangria that makes it summertime, anytime.

Grapefruit Orange Sangria

INGREDIENTS: 
1 bottle Riesling wine,  750ml
12 – 15 mint leaves + extra for garnish
2 tablespoons simple syrup *recipe below
2 ripe grapefruits
2 ripe oranges
2 limes
Club soda

DIRECTIONS:
Simple syrup: 1/2 cup sugar + 1/2 cup water

To prepare the simple syrup, add the water and sugar to a small pot, bring to a full boil, stir well, and remove from the heat. Let this cool while you work on the fruit.

To prepare the fruit, cut in into chunks or slices that will easily fit the carafe or pitcher you’re using. You want to be sure you can easily get it out when pouring the cocktail into your glasses.

Grapefruit Orange Sangria - Ingredients

Add a few pieces of grapefruit to the carafe, followed by a few pieces of orange, and a few mint leaves. To bring out the flavor of the mint, you can muddle it a little first.

Repeat the layering until the carafe is about 1/2 full of fruit.

Add two tablespoons of simple syrup, and pour the Riesling over the fruit until it’s almost to the top. Leave some room for stirring. Place in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours or until well chilled. I like to give it a stir every 30 minutes or so. Before serving, taste and add more simple syrup to suit your tastes.

Pour into individual glasses, top off with a splash of club soda, and garnish with a few small pieces of mint!

    So looking forward to this once I stop nursing baby # 3.

  2. I really must try this. I love citrus ! Nit sure in the Reinking wine. Is it dry or semi dry or semi sweet.
    But willing to try as long as it’s not to dry.

    1. Riesling is fairly sweet, definitely not a “dry” wine.
