This Smothered Bacon Green Bean Casserole is a simple and tasty way to jazz up the holiday dinner table.  And when I say simple, I mean simple.  Anyone can make this recipe, and believe me when I say, this will be the side dish EVERYONE will be gushing over.

Can I use fresh green beans instead of canned?

Yes, fresh green beans can be used in this recipe. For best results, trim the ends and blanch them in boiling water for about 5 minutes before shocking them in an ice bath. This will keep the beans vibrant and tender. Drain them well before using.

What if I don’t have a 9×13 baking dish?

Any large baking dish or large skillet that can hold the green bean mixture will work. Just ensure it’s oven-safe if you’re planning to bake the casserole.

Can I prepare this green bean casserole ahead of time?

Absolutely! Assemble the casserole but hold off on baking it. Cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator. Before serving, bake it as directed, possibly adding a few extra minutes to compensate for starting from a cold state.

Are there any substitutions for soy sauce?

If soy sauce isn’t available, you can use tamari or a bit of chicken broth with a pinch of salt for a similar umami flavor profile.

How can I store leftovers?

Ingredients:
4 can (14.5 oz) any style Del Monte Green Beans, drained
10 slices of bacon, cooked
2 Tablespoons soy sauce
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Place the drained green beans into a large mixing bowl.  Set aside.

  2. For this recipe, I like to use Del Monte green beans. They are a quick and easy solution that don’t compromise the quality or taste of my holiday dishes.

  3. Prepare bacon according to package. (I love cooking my in the oven) Cut in to large pieces and set aside.

  4. Combine the soy sauce,  brown sugar, melted butter, garlic powder, salt and pepper into a small bowl. Stir until well combined.

  5. Next, pour mixture over green beans and add your bacon. Gently stir, until beans are evenly coated.

  6. Place the green beans into  a 9×13 casserole dish or baking pan. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

    I have never liked the traditional green bean casserole. So when I made this recipe for the first time, I thought I was in heaven. I’ve been making this recipe for the past few years and it’s always a hit.

    I made this recipe for Easter with few tweaks & it was very delicious. I quartered the sauce (plus added a little bacon grease) and I used 1 pound of fresh green beans. First I air fried my uncut, French green beans with a little olive oil for about 10 minutes. Then I added the sauce & bacon bits before air frying for about 3 minutes. Then topped with the onions & air fried about 2 minutes. They came out perfect.

  4. I have been making this recipe now for Thanksgiving for quite a few years (or when we have a nice Meatloaf dinner) as a side. However, I do just a few things different and the dish is still a hit!! 1. Soy sauce is just not permitted in my house because of my youngest child being super sensitive to sodium. I keep coconut aminos instead for a better option and replace the soy sauce with that. 2. I add 2 Tbs of pure Maple Syrup to it in place of the brown sugar and I think it makes it just as flavorful. I don’t add a pinch of salt cause the bacon and the canned beans seem to make up for it and I like to let it sit in a bowl and really soak up those flavors for a few hours before cooking! Now the hard part is…not picking at before putting it in the oven lol!
