Are you getting bored of serving the same old green bean casserole? Boy oh boy, do I have a recipe for you. Trust me, this NEEDS to be on your Thanksgiving menu.

This Smothered Bacon Green Bean Casserole is a simple and tasty way to jazz up the holiday dinner table. And when I say simple, I mean simple. Anyone can make this recipe, and believe me when I say, this will be the side dish EVERYONE will be gushing over.

Yes, fresh green beans can be used in this recipe. For best results, trim the ends and blanch them in boiling water for about 5 minutes before shocking them in an ice bath. This will keep the beans vibrant and tender. Drain them well before using.
Any large baking dish or large skillet that can hold the green bean mixture will work. Just ensure it’s oven-safe if you’re planning to bake the casserole.
Absolutely! Assemble the casserole but hold off on baking it. Cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator. Before serving, bake it as directed, possibly adding a few extra minutes to compensate for starting from a cold state.
If soy sauce isn’t available, you can use tamari or a bit of chicken broth with a pinch of salt for a similar umami flavor profile.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in a microwave or in the oven until heated through.

- For a homemade touch: Consider adding a layer of crispy fried onions or homemade crispy onions on top for the last 5 minutes of baking to add a delightful crunch.
- Enhance the flavor: If you’re looking for a richer flavor, consider sautéing some button mushrooms in a large skillet over medium heat and adding them to the green bean mixture.
- Creamy variant: To transform this into a favorite green bean casserole with a creamy twist, mix in a can of cream of mushroom soup before baking. This will make the casserole creamier and is perfect for the holiday table.
- Boosting texture: Instead of melting the butter, try browning it in a skillet over medium-high heat until golden brown before mixing with the other ingredients. This will add a nutty flavor to the dish.
- Keeping things crispy: If you prefer the bacon to remain crispy, consider adding it to the casserole during the last 10 minutes of baking instead of mixing it in with the green beans from the start.

I modified the recipe a bit using three 12 oz. bags of frozen whole green beans, cut in half lengthwise, instead of the four cans based on information that each can contains about 9 ounces of beans after being drained (36 oz.). The proportions seemed correct. The whole green beans may not absorb the sauce as well, so I would use cut frozen beans next time.
Fabulous alternative to the standard Thanksgiving dinner green bean casserole. Total home run, from the 2 year old up to the 92 year old, and every mouth in between!
Have made this recipe so many times it is a family favorite love it so much
I make these for thanksgiving every year! What if I used fresh green beans?
I would add on a little more cooking time. So happy you love the recipe Hannah!
This recipe was a hit both times I made it. The only thing I add to it is a tablespoon of the bacon drippings.
Also, once I made it all at once and cooked it. The other time, I put it all together the night before and put in the fridge. The next day, I baked it right before our holiday gathering. I think it was a lot more flavorful when I prepared it the night before. Maybe that’s because the beans really soak up the sauce? Just wanted to let you know in case somebody else wants to do that.
My entire family LOVES these green beans. They’re so easy to make, too.
