Crockpot Root Beer Chicken Wings

Chicken wings served on a white plateLet me just start out by saying, I love Buffalo wings. (In fact, I pretty much love Buffalo anything, including sandwiches, Tater Tots, and cauliflower.) But I feel like it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. People get so hung up on Buffalo wings as a party appetizer, they forget that there are other things you can do with chicken wings. And that’s a shame, because wings are such a handy finger food that they deserve to be enjoyed in as many ways as possible.

So I’m on a quest to change this. First I introduced my Honey Soy Sticky Chicken Wings, and then I followed that up with my Cilantro Lime Chicken Wings. And now, here’s my latest way to wing it: Crockpot Root Beer Chicken Wings.Crockpot Root Beer Chicken Wings stacked on a white plate

This recipe has two stages. First, you cook the wings in the Crockpot with a sweet and spicy sauce made from root beer, brown sugar, red pepper flakes, and your favorite barbecue sauce. Then, after they’re cooked, spread them on a baking sheet, add a little more sauce, and broil them until they get nice and brown. They’ll come out crispy, spicy, sweet, and tangy – everything a great party food should be, in one little package.

Have you tried to crisp these in an air fryer? I’m sure it must be possible. I use an air fryer more than my oven.

  2. Katy Waldrop says:

Could you make this with regular chicken legs? How would you adjust the time?

    1. You sure can! I would keep the cooking time the same 🙂

    1. No they are not.

  3. Did you defrost the drummettes beforehand? Thanks!

  4. Stacey Rook says:

To take these to a picnic in the crock pot would I add more bbq sauce n root beer and once cooked put chicken back in the new sauce just so the chicken is sitting in something or should I just put the chicken back in clean crock pot on low with no sauce?

    1. Are you plugging them back in at the picnic area?
