Applesauce Cake
Celebrate the flavors of the season with this simple and moist Applesauce Cake! Flavored with the warm holiday spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, it’s sure to be a favorite with the family and a great addition to your holiday menus and social gatherings too.
In all honesty, It’s so good that I usually get asked to make it throughout the year which doesn’t phase me seeing as it’s super simple to make with only 10 minutes of prep work while my oven does the rest! Even better is that it freezes well which helps me to prepare for the holidays ahead of time!
The applesauce keeps the cake deliciously moist while the perfect amount of nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar and walnuts make it hard to resist. Add an optional finishing touch by dusting soft, powdered sugar once the cake has cooled for some extra baking flare and presentation!
CAN I ADD ANYTHING INTO MY APPLESAUCE CAKE?
- Applesauce cakes are commonly made with nuts and raisins. Here are some ingredients that you can add to your applesauce cake.
- Nuts: I prefer using chopped walnuts, but you can substitute the walnuts for pecans or your favorite type of nut.
- Raisins or cranberries
- Chocolate chips: If you would like a sweeter applesauce cake, feel free to add in an additional ½-1 cup of chocolate chips. I recommend using a semi-sweet or dark chocolate chip for this cake.
HOW DO I STORE MY APPLESAUCE CAKE?
- You can store your applesauce cake in the refrigerator or at room temperature for an additional four to five days. Make sure it is stored in an airtight container.
- You can also freeze this cake for up to three months. I recommend freezing the cake without the powdered sugar topping. Once the cake defrosts, the powdered sugar is more likely to get gummy if it’s frozen on top of the cake.
TIPS FOR MAKING APPLESAUCE CAKE
- Do not over mix your Applesauce Cake ingredients as over mixing causes cakes to develop gluten which contributes to a density similar to bread. Instead, mix the wet and dry ingredients together only until combined.
- Use a toothpick or cake tester and insert it into the thickest part of the cake to check it’s baked through. Despite oven time specified, all ovens are different so best to ensure that the middle of the cake isn’t under-baked.
- Cake batters can fill up pans quite easily. If you feel that there may be some spilling over the sides while baking, then place some foil on the rack below the one you are using to bake your cake in order to catch any spills or drips.
Make sure the cake is completely cooled before adding powdered sugar otherwise it will melt.
How to make Applesauce Cake
- Preheat the oven to 350° degrees F. Beat the butter and sugar until fluffy, about 1-2 minutes.
- Add in eggs and continue to stir.
- Combine the dry ingredients (flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and baking powder). Alternate adding in the applesauce and dry ingredients into the butter mixture, stirring after each addition until all of the ingredients are combined.
- Fold in walnuts.
- Pour the mixture into the greased 8×8 inch pan and bake in oven for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick or tester comes out clean.
- Once the cake is finished cooking, allow to cool. Dust cake with powdered sugar, optional.
