Cottage Cheese Tuna Salad

OK, quick question: when you hear the phrase “tuna salad,” how does it make you feel?

Not very excited, right? Because you’re probably picturing what passes for tuna salad in the average cafeteria: just some cheap tuna and mayonnaise stirred together into a damp, beige glob and smushed between two pieces of bread.

Protein Packed Salad

Well, I want you to take that idea and toss it out the window. (In fact, if you happen to have a bowl of it in front of you, feel free to literally toss it out the window.)

Cottage Cheese Tuna Salad served as a sandwich on a white plate

I’m going to introduce you to an exciting tuna salad. A tuna salad made with delicate, flaky albacore tuna, not mushy “light” tuna. With light, lean cottage cheese in place of mayo. Sprinkled throughout with fragments of zesty red onion, crunchy celery, dill pickles, and salty capers. Delicately seasoned with salt and pepper, garlic and dill. And served on a real, thick, hearty, crusty bread.

A sandwich made with this Cottage Cheese Tuna Salad is definitely not the kind of lunch you wolf down at your desk, not bothering to taste it. It’s a work of art, meant to be savored. Take your time, and give it the attention it deserves.

Loved this! I didn’t have celery or pickles on hand so I just mixed in dried dill and celery seeds. I was too hungry and didn’t chill it. Still turned out amazing. I subbed the bread for lettuce and made a salad. This is a keeper!

  2. How long can I keep it on the refrigetrator? Love it!

    1. I would use it within 2-3 days

This is so good! I love that cottage cheese is substituted for mayo. How genius! I’m actually not a huge fan of cottage cheese (texture issues) but I’ve grown to like it, especially when mixed with other ingredients. This will be my go-to recipe from now on when making tuna salad sandwiches!

    1. Awesome! So happy you loved the recipe Willow

What a great, and flexible recipe! Thank you! I can eat this with a fork and we also like it with crackers or a wrap. I have been looking for a tuna salad recipe that does not have egg, mayo or miracle whip (I love all those things, but my tummy no longer does not !) This fits the bill. I like finely chopped radishes in mine too. Thanks again for the yummy recipe 🙂

  5. Excellent recipe! Followed it exactly except I added a tablespoon and a half of mayo and maybe a couple tablespoons more of cottage cheese. Helped it be a bit creamier. Also didn’t even add any extra salt and just let the pickles and capers do the job.
