An easy one-pot meal gets even easier.
How to make Goulash in the instant pot!
Last year, I came up with an easy goulash recipe that took about 40 minutes to make, with only 10 to 15 minutes of actual cooking time. This made a complete, hearty, one-pot meal that was also kid-friendly, and I was pretty happy with it.
But lately, I’ve been making a whole bunch of meals with my Instant Pot, and it got me to thinking. Could the Instant Pot make that easy goulash even easier and faster?
Turns out, it can.
This Instant Pot Goulash has all the same great stuff my original Grandma’s Easy Goulash: lean ground beef, tomatoes, noodles, cheese, and plenty of zesty seasoning. And it cooks in about half the time of the original.
You still have to brown the beef with onion and seasoning, but you can do that right in the Instant Pot on the sauté setting. Then you just toss in the rest of the ingredients (except the cheese) and cook it for five minutes on high pressure. Remove the bay leaves, add the cheese, and voilà – dinner is served.
Instant Pot Goulash – because the only thing better than an easy one-pot meal is a really easy one-pot meal.

- Turn the Instant Pot onto saute. When hot, add ground beef garlic, seasoning salt, pepper and onion. Cook until meat is browned.
- When meat is browned drain fat if needed, then add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, broth, parsley, oregano, noodles, and bay leaves. Set your Instant Pot to manual high pressure for 5 minutes. When timer is up preform a quick release of pressure.

Can you substitute a different type of pasta? If so, would the cook time change at all?
Joan S says
It appears the Print version of the recipe does not have specific ingredient amounts?
Corey says
Hi Joan, The printable version is all fixed up! Thank you for letting me know 🙂

Made this tonight. GREAT recipe and taste! Used diced tomatoes with some spices in them to give it an extra kick. Thank you! A keeper for sure.

Made this last night for my dad, who hasn’t had homemade goulash since my mom got sick, which was… at least eight years ago. It was also my first time using my Instant Pot (after 10 months of it intimidating me from its box). It turned out perfectly, and it was a huge hit with my dad! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!
(Most people who cook regularly probably know this, but I generally hate cooking and didn’t think about it. If you use beef stock, like I did, and you’re not a huge fan of salt, you may want to cut back on the seasoning salt. But we’re a salt-loving household, so it worked out.)
Lori says
THANK YOU! I haven’’t made or had goulash in decades…..it was a staple when I was growing up in the 70s and early 80s. It is generally just my hubby and I for dinner these days so I will plan on making a half batch of this, maybe this weekend. I can’t wait!!!!
Michelle says
This was delicious and my family loved it! Recipe worked perfectly! This was my first recipe that I had made in the Instant Pit. (Other than baked potatoes). The directions were clear and simple and also liked the pictures to assure me that mine “looked tight”! Thank you! I am looking forward to trying more of your recipes! 🙂

My 3 kids, husband, and brother-in-law all liked this meal. It was easy and quick to make – perfect for my busy schedule. Thanks for sharing !

I have the Instant Pot Mini so would I cut the recipes in half? I’ve not used it yet so I just want to make sure nothing expands too much. I notice that most recipes I’m finding are for the 6 quart and mine is 3 quart. Is it safe to assume that most recipes are for the 6 quart even if they don’t say so?
Christie says
Yes, 99.9999% of recipes you’ll see for the IP are written for the 6qt as that’s the original size. You can cut them in half just make sure you have enough water in there or it will not come to pressure or burn. My honest opinion would be to get yourself a 6qt and save the 3qt for yougurt and rice (IPs make the BEST rice).
Diane Schroeder says
I have been craving goulash and got my Instant Pot a few weeks ago. This was not my first meal in the pot and it turned out great. I used penne pasta and next time will add more because I love the pasta. It was ready so fast, really happy with this recipe.
Carol says
Your recipe looks good and I am going to try it tonight. Would like to suggest you make a print button so I don’t have to copy and paste all over the place to print your recipes. Thanks:)
Carol says
Oops, just found the print version. Please disregard previous comment.
Corey says
Great! I was just logging on to let you know where the print button was. I hope you love the recipe.
Aubrey says
Can I add a can of red beans and also a can of corn? Would the cooking time still be the same?
Rick says
My Husband and I really enjoyed this recipe. Making it again. Obviously it is a keeper for us!!
L Ferris says
This turned out great! It was my first time doing pasta in the Instant Pot and I was worried the pasta would be floppy and the broth would be starchy. Not at all! Now I’ll always do goulash in the Instant Pot! Thanks for the yummy; easy recipe!
Georgia says
I made this today great meal thanks for shating
Stephanie says
Would subbing chicken broth for beef make a big difference in this recipe?
Corey says
No, either would work just fine.
Mollux says
I haven’t made goulash in a long time, but my four children bought me an Instant Pot for Christmas, and I’ve had fun trying different recipes. Today I made your goulash recipe for lunch for my kids and grandkids who are visiting, and it was a huge hit! They ate every bite–nothing left in the pot!! I love this recipe, and will be using it often! Thank you!!
Sarah says
This recipe looks delicious! I would like mine to be a bit more soupy, and am wondering if adding more broth would be sufficient or do you believe that additional seasonings would need to be added?
Bill Ricks says
Can I cut this recipe in half?
Heidi says
I just got the ingredients and plan to make it this weekend. I will be use stock instead of broth and add some diced bell pepper
heidi l says
I just made this. folowed the recipie exact except added a little bell pepper. Very good but the cheddar cheese was a liitle too sharp and masked the other flavors. i do reccomend a milder cheese like colby jack
Don Carlson says
Great recipe. It’s one of those recipes that is a little underwhelming at first but gets better as you’re eating. It takes a moment to appreciate the depth of flavor. This will be added to my regular rotation. That’s the highest recommendation I can give.
Maria says
Wow!!!! This Goulash was so awesome!! And to top it off my very picky son had two servings!!!
Leigha Mertens says
What is the weight amount of one serving?
Ashley says
Looking forward to trying this! My husband has gout so I was going to try this with frozen meatless beef instead. Would you suggest any modifications? Thanks!!
Andrea says
I tried this recipe today, It was easy & fast, and tasted great.
Donald Carlson says
Super easy and so much flavor. I was underwhelmed at first bite but then I noticed a depth of flavor I hadn’t noticed initially. That sounds pretentious. It may be that the first couple bites were too hot and as it cooled it was better. I’ve made it 3 times now so that says something.
Larry Farquhar says
I made this recipe today for a pot luck lunch at Church. Everyone who ate it loved it. Only problem is, ran out before 1/2 the line had gone through. I have an 8 quart Instant Pot Duo. I believe that there’s enough room to make a double batch. Question is would I pressure cook for the same time, or will I need to cook it longer? If so about how much longer? Also, will I need to use 4 Bay Leaves instead of two? Thanks
Corey says
I haven’t ever tried making a double batch of this one Larry, so I can’t say for sure. I think the cooking time should be about the same, and I would only up the bay leaves to 3 🙂 I hope that helps 🙂
Susan K says
Added a few more spices and little bit more pasta and the whole family loved it! Will definitely be making again. Thank you for the recipe!
Ellie says
Quite tasty! I had to cook some additional time for the macaroni.
Larry Gaines says
Your recipe for beef stew is missing. The link goes to Five cheese Ziti
Kimberly says
This recipe was very good. Definitely will make it again

I wanted sausage also in the recipe so browned them first, removed from the pot then cooked the meat as directed. I pretty well added the other ingredients and cooked 20 minutes under pressure. It was great and thank you. It made enough for 3 meals (there are only two of us). I love my instant pot.
Melinda McConnell says
My husband is a Goulash destroyer! It’s his favorite meal. So I made this recipe for him. I didn’t change or add anything. Made it just like it says. He thought this was the absolute best recipe he has had. I will definitely make it again!
Ellimom says
I’ve made this MANY times, and it never disappoints. NEVER! Hubby has a beef allergy, so I must make it w/ground turkey. Several friends have celiac, so I’ve made it w/gf pasta and worcestershire alternatives. It’s decicious every time–including as leftovers.
My one note is to not ‘keep warm’ as the noodles can get mushy. It keeps hot in the instant pot plenty long without heat.
Thanks for a fantastic, easy, go-to recipe!
Corey says
So happy you love the recipe!
Michelle Deus says
I followed the recipe with one exception, I didn’t have tomato sauce. It wasn’t missed to be honest. The elbow macaroni wasn’t cooked after the 5 minutes so I put the lid back on and went for 3 minutes more.
Wonderful! Very flavorful and super easy. I love finding an instant pot recipe worth repeating. Thank you!
