I’ve opted to make my meatballs from scratch for this recipe since it’s so quick and easy to do but you also have the option of purchasing pre-cooked meatballs if you want to reduce your cook time even more.

Assembling these meatball subs is a cinch and the rich flavors you get from the pasta sauce, melted cheese and herbs mean that they’re guaranteed to be loved by all!

TIPS FOR MAKING BAKED MEATBALL SUBS

  • If you intend serving these meatball subs at a party, social gathering or for meals away from home, I recommend that you wrap each individual sub in foil prior to baking. Let them all bake in their foil, allowing you to easily hand out or serve without any fuss or mess.
  • I use pasta sauce for these meatball subs but you could also make use of store-bought or homemade marinara sauce.
  • Want to skip making the meatballs yourself? You can always opt to use store-bought meatballs for this recipe such as Johnsonville Classic Italian Style Meatballs which are fully cooked and can be stored frozen.
  • You can use cheddar cheese instead of mozzarella. Any cheese that melts well is ideal.

CAN I FREEZE THESE BAKED MEATBALL SUBS?

  • I wouldn’t recommend freezing these meatball subs once they’ve been assembled as they will most likely become soggy from the sauce and other ingredients once thawed out.
  • If you want to try meal prep for this recipe, you can certainly make the meatballs ahead of time. Once they have completely cooled, place your meatballs on a greased baking sheet or one that’s lined with parchment paper in your freezer until they are solid. Once frozen solid, remove the meatballs from the baking tray and store them in an airtight freezer bag.
  • When ready to assemble your meatball subs, add your pasta sauce and frozen meatballs to a large stockpot and cook over medium heat until your meatballs have defrosted and are thoroughly heated.
