Recipe Notes:

  •  If you don’t want to take the time to melt the butter, you can slice the sticks of butter evenly into 1⁄4 inch thick slices and place them in rows on top of the cake mix.
  • This recipe can also be made in a crockpot! After greasing the crock of the slow cooker with butter or oil, layer the ingredients as stated in the recipe. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or high for 2 hours. Because the slow cooker is a moist heat versus the dry heat It won’t get ‘golden’ on the top, but it still tastes delicious!
  • I like to use an all natural pie filling such as Duncan Hines Simply peach pie filling. Keep in mind, when using an all natural can, or homemade, the color may not be as vibrant, but the taste is still impeccable.
  • My cake was finished after 50 minutes at 350°, however, ovens can vary, so keep an eye on it.

What is a dump cake?

A dump cake is a dessert that typically consists of pie filling, cake mix, and melted butter, which are layered in a baking dish and baked until golden brown. It is called a dump cake, because it is prepared by “dumping” the ingredients in a dish and not mixing them

Can I use canned peaches instead of pie filling?

Yes, you can use canned peaches for this recipe, but you should make some tweaks. Use two cans of canned peaches in syrup, drain one and leave the other one undrained. You may want to add vanilla extract, brown sugar and cinnamon to give it more of a pie filling flavor, but it works fine without.

What is the difference between a dump cake and a cobbler?

A dump cake is made with cake mix, and a cobbler uses a biscuit or pie crust topping.

Can I freeze peach dump cake?

While it’s possible to freeze it, the texture may change once it’s thawed. Enjoy it fresh or within a day or two of baking for best results.

VARIATIONS:

  • Use yellow cake mix or spice cake mix to change up the flavor.
  • Add almond extract or vanilla extract to the peach pie filling to add depth.
  • Feel free to add cinnamon or nutmeg for some warmth and aroma.
  • You can use pecans, instead of almonds if you prefer, or leave the nuts off completely. I like how they give a bit of texture and crunch to the cake.
