Bake Fish and Rice on a plate
Can I use brown rice instead of white rice?

Brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice or regular rice, so it’s not recommended unless you increase the liquid and baking time significantly.

What other fish can I use?

Any type of firm white fish works well, such as haddock or pollock, as long as the fillets are similar in thickness to cod fillets.

Can I make this with fresh cod or frozen?

Both work great—just be sure frozen fish is fully thawed and patted dry before baking.

Ingredient Notes

ingredients for Baked Fish and Rice
  • Cod fillets (fresh or frozen & thawed) – A type of firm white fish that bakes up flaky and mild, making it perfect for family friendly fish recipes.
  • Long-grain white rice – This regular rice cooks evenly in the oven and absorbs the savory broth for a perfect fish rice base.
  • Chicken broth – Adds rich flavor to the rice so it turns out fluffy instead of bland.
  • Crispy fried onions – Bring texture and a golden brown topping that everyone loves.
  • Butter – Melts over the fish fillets to keep them juicy and flavorful.
  • Olive oil – Helps the fish cook evenly and prevents sticking while adding subtle richness.
  • Teaspoon garlic powder – Adds savory depth without overpowering the fish.
  • Paprika – Gives gentle warmth and beautiful color to the cod fillets.
  • Salt – Enhances all the flavors in both the rice recipe and the fish.
  • Ground black pepper – Adds just enough bite to balance the richness of the butter and cheese.
  • Fresh parsley – Brings brightness and a pop of fresh herbs to finish the dish.
  • Parmesan cheese – Melts into a savory topping that pairs beautifully with baked fish.
  • Lemon slices – A squeeze of lemon juice right before serving wakes up all the flavors.
