Grilled Ahi Tuna Steaks

Grilled Ahi Tuna Steaks are marinated in a flavorful soy sauce and honey marinade before being perfectly seared on each side while remaining soft and pink inside.

These grilled tuna steaks are an inexpensive alternative to salmon and can be made in just 30 minutes for the entire family, served with rice, green beans, or an Asian-style side salad.

Recipe Notes:

  • For a truly low-calorie meal, serve the grilled tuna steaks with your favorite steamed green vegetable, like asparagus or tender stem broccoli. I love to serve these grilled tuna steaks with rice and green beans, or an Asian-style side salad with dressing.
  • The marinade in this recipe provides great umami flavor, although it’s completely optional. 
  • While I love salmon, it can get pricey, especially when serving a large family. Tuna is a great alternative that’s healthy, tasty, and inexpensive. 
  • If you enjoy a kick of heat in your food, add a small amount of cayenne pepper to the marinade. 
  • It’s important that the pan or grill used is coated well with cooking spray so that the tuna steaks don’t stick to the pan’s surface. The pan must also be searing hot before adding the tuna steaks. Like all meat, allow your seared tuna steaks to rest for a few minutes before serving.

What is Ahi Tuna?

Ahi tuna refers to two species of tuna: yellowfin and bigeye tuna. It’s often the cheaper option compared to something like bluefin tuna, although the flavor and texture are very similar.

You can usually source this tuna in the frozen aisle of your local grocery store or the fresh seafood section.

Can I cook the tuna in a pan instead of the grill?

Absolutely! You can sear the tuna steaks in a pan on the stovetop over medium heat, spraying the pan generously with cooking spray.

Can I make the marinade in advance?

Yes, you can! To shorten the cooking time of this meal, you can make the marinade beforehand. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where it can be stored for up to 2 weeks.

Grilled Ahi Tuna Steaks

  2. Season your tuna steaks with salt and pepper and then place them in a ziplock bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade in and allow it to sit for 15-25 minutes. You do not want it to marinade any longer since the vinegar can begin to “cook” the tuna like in ceviche. steak marinading in dish
  3. Turn your grill on high. Generously spray the grill with non sticking cooking spray. Place your steaks on the grill to sear for 2-3 minutes per side. It should be crispy on the outside and bright pink on the inside. tuna steaks on grill

Ingredients
 

  • 8 oz tuna steak ( 2 – 4oz steaks)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Marinade

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 1 Tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp minced ginger
  • 1 tsp minced garlic

Coating

  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Combine your marinade in a small bowl.
  • Season your tuna steaks with salt and pepper and then place them in a ziplock bag. Pour the marinade in and allow it to sit for 15-25 minutes. You do not want it to marinade any longer since the vinegar can begin to “cook” the tuna like in ceviche.

  3. What do you do with the soy sauce? It doesn’t appear in the recipe.

    1. The soy sauce is used in the marinade.I hope that helps.
