Cook whole sweet potatoes on LOW for 6–7 hours or HIGH for 3½–4 hours. The exact time can vary depending on the size of your potatoes and your slow cooker.

No. You do not need to add water. Scrub and rinse the sweet potatoes and place them in the crockpot while they’re still damp.

No foil is needed for this recipe. Place the whole sweet potatoes directly into the crockpot after rinsing them.

How do you know when crockpot sweet potatoes are done?

The sweet potatoes are ready when a fork can easily be inserted into the center. If they’re still firm, cover the slow cooker and let them cook a little longer.

Ingredient Notes

  • Sweet potatoes: Choose potatoes that are close to the same size so they finish cooking around the same time.
  • Optional toppings: Butter, brown sugar, chili, shredded BBQ chicken, black beans, or your other favorite sweet potato toppings all work well.

BOOM! Perfect potatoes every time! What will you be topping your sweet potatoes with?

  • Choose similar-sized potatoes. This helps them cook evenly.
  • Don’t dry them after rinsing. The small amount of water left on the potatoes gives them all the moisture they need while cooking.
  • Don’t add water to the slow cooker. The damp potatoes and moisture trapped inside the crockpot are enough.
  • Start checking them near the end of the cooking time. Larger sweet potatoes may take a little longer than smaller ones.
  • Use a fork to check for doneness. It should slide easily into the center of the sweet potato.

Every Monday night in our ER we have a collective buffet of food based on a theme, such as taco night, or Italian night, etc. We’re having a baked potato bar and salad night this coming Monday. I thought some sweet potatoes would change things up a bit. So far the response on our communication page there is much interest. Monday night are notorious for being wild, over run, extremely busy nights in our ED so we get to eat healthy meals around 2-3am. This will cook just right in time.

  3. Do you poke holes in the potatoes?

Cooked mine from 4am to 1130am and they were still hard…wonder what I did wrong 🙁 they are in the oven now

    1. That is strange. Did you use low or high setting?

    2. Amanda Webb says:

I’m hoping to hear the temperature they used as I’m planning on making them tomorrow for Thanksgiving. Can you set them on high? And at the risk of being stoned, I’ll need to stack sweet potatoes on top of each other in 2 layers. So should I rotate them top to bottom 1/2 way through? I know it’s a sin to take the lid off?

  5. Can I cook these as wedges
