Italian Hoagie Dip
Italian Hoagie Dip tastes just like the original sandwich but this time the filling is served with baguette slices or your favorite crackers! Prepare it for parties, game day or simply enjoy it with the family at home- regardless, it’s one of those dishes that will always get wiped clean as fast as you serve it!
Packing all the delicious flavors of your favorite Italian Hoagie but without the fuss of assembling a ton of sandwiches means that this dip is super easy to make and can be served dip-style on slices of baguettes or alongside a spread of your preferred crackers and veggies. I have also been known to eat this dip as it is – it’s THAT GOOD!
The flavor explosion you’ll experience is all thanks to the layers of Italian meats, cheese, creamy mayo and diced veggies/fruit. Whoever first had the inclination to turn this classic sandwich into a dip…I thank you!! Read below for the full recipe.
Italian Hoagie Dip
- Dice all meat, cheese, and vegetables/fruit into bite-size pieces. Toss together in a large bowl.
- In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, olive oil, dried mustard, Italian seasoning, vinegar, and pepperoncini juice.
- Pour dressing mixture over meats/cheese/veggies and toss to thoroughly mix.
- Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.
WHAT IS HOAGIE?
- Hoagie is traditionally a submarine sandwich that’s filled with Italian meats, cheeses, and other delicious toppings. They are also known to some as heroes and grinders.
- There are various stories of how this sandwich name came to be, one of which is said to stem from the area of Philadelphia where, during World War I, Italian immigrants working at the Hog Island shipyard (nicknamed “hoggies”), started making sandwiches for their shift lunches while building ships for the American Navy. The nickname then passed on to the lunchtime meal and has been adapted over time to “hoagie”.
CAN I MAKE ITALIAN HOAGIE DIP AHEAD OF TIME?
- I recommend that you only make this dip a maximum of a day ahead of serving it and wait to add the lettuce right before serving otherwise it will go soft and soggy.
CAN I STORE LEFTOVER HOAGIE DIP?
- Store any leftover hoagie dip in your refrigerator for 1 or 2 days at most as the lettuce will get soft and soggy if stored for longer than that.
You won’t be able to freeze this dip as some of the ingredients will become a soggy, mushy mess once thawed out.
WHAT GOES WELL WITH THIS HOAGIE DIP?
- Hoagie dip is delicious served on crunchy bread, baguettes, crackers, or healthy baked pita chips. You can even eat it with carrot sticks and sliced celery or cucumber for an added crunch!
TIPS FOR MAKING ITALIAN HOAGIE DIP
- Serve your dip as soon as possible once made to avoid your ingredients from going soggy.
- Apart from pepperoncini, you can provide your hoagie dip with an added kick by also including diced banana peppers.
- If you prefer not to use Mayo in this dip then simply add a bit more olive oil such as EVOO.
- I prefer sticking to the sandwich theme by serving this with baguettes but you can also serve it with crackers, chips or dip-appropriate veggies.
