Skinny Baked Mozzarella Sticks Recipe
Since I have a cheese obsessed husband, we are always ordering mozzarella sticks when we go out to dinner. Oh how I love this cheesy finger food, but not the fried, unhealthy factor.
So I busted out the bread crumbs and got to work! This baked, healthier version of my husband’s favorite appetizer got two big thumbs up from the family. SWEET!
Skinny Baked Mozzarella Sticks Recipe
- 12 sticks part-skim mozzarella string cheese
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs
- 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 3 teaspoons all purpose seasoning (such as Mrs. Dash)
- Olive oil cooking spray
- Marinara sauce for dipping
- Remove string cheese from wrappers and cut half, making 24 pieces. Place cheese in a ziplock bag and freeze cheese until frozen ( at least 1 hour)
- In one bowl place flour, in second bowl place your beaten egg, and in third bowl place bread crumbs, panko and all purpose seasoning.
- Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with olive oil cooking spray.
- Start your mozzarella stick assembly line. One at a time, first dip frozen cheese stick in flour, then into egg, followed by bread crumbs. Place on baking sheet and repeat until all cheese sticks are done.
- NOTE: If you are making these ahead of time for a party, you can place baking sheet in freezer until ready to bake.
- When ready to bake, preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Bake for about 5 minutes, then turn sticks over and continue to bake an additional 5-6 minutes or until golden brown and cheese just starts to seep out. (Drool….)
- Serve hot with marinara sauce or Ranch dressing for dipping.
