Can I use fresh green beans instead of canned?

Yes, fresh green beans can be used in this recipe. For best results, trim the ends and blanch them in boiling water for about 5 minutes before shocking them in an ice bath. This will keep the beans vibrant and tender. Drain them well before using.

What if I don’t have a 9×13 baking dish?

Any large baking dish or large skillet that can hold the green bean mixture will work. Just ensure it’s oven-safe if you’re planning to bake the casserole.

Can I prepare this green bean casserole ahead of time?

Absolutely! Assemble the casserole but hold off on baking it. Cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator. Before serving, bake it as directed, possibly adding a few extra minutes to compensate for starting from a cold state.

Are there any substitutions for soy sauce?

If soy sauce isn’t available, you can use tamari or a bit of chicken broth with a pinch of salt for a similar umami flavor profile.

How can I store leftovers?

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in a microwave or in the oven until heated through.

  • For a homemade touch: Consider adding a layer of crispy fried onions or homemade crispy onions on top for the last 5 minutes of baking to add a delightful crunch.
  • Enhance the flavor: If you’re looking for a richer flavor, consider sautéing some button mushrooms in a large skillet over medium heat and adding them to the green bean mixture.
  • Creamy variant: To transform this into a favorite green bean casserole with a creamy twist, mix in a can of cream of mushroom soup before baking. This will make the casserole creamier and is perfect for the holiday table.
  • Boosting texture: Instead of melting the butter, try browning it in a skillet over medium-high heat until golden brown before mixing with the other ingredients. This will add a nutty flavor to the dish.
  • Keeping things crispy: If you prefer the bacon to remain crispy, consider adding it to the casserole during the last 10 minutes of baking instead of mixing it in with the green beans from the start.

Anyone tried using fresh green beans?

    1. Theresa Wade says:

Yes, I make this recipe using fresh green beans. I cook them on the stove until crisp tender so that when they go in the oven for the 30 minutes, they’re not too overcooked.

  2. This is kind of an odd question. How do you think these would be with everything but the bacon? I make these as is, but I’m making them for a feast at work and some coworkers do not eat pork. Do you think that if I make these as is without bacon they will still be pretty tasty? Maybe I could add some bacon salt which as far as I know is vegetarian? Let me know what you think! Thank you in advance!

    1. Yes, I think that would work out just fine. You could also add in a touch of liquid smoke if you wanted to add in the smokey flavor from the bacon if you cannot find vegetarian bacon salt. there are also plenty of vegetarian “bacon” products at our local store 🙂

  3. Can use fresh green beans

    1. Yes you can. I would blanch them before. You might need to add on a little more cooking time too.
