Sweet Slow Cooker Sesame Chicken Recipe

I’ve ordered sesame chicken many times from our local Chinese restaurant, but I never dreamed it would be THIS EASY to create myself. I love that I have control of what goes into my favorite take-out treat, so I don’t feel bad going back for seconds.
Not only is this version healthier and cheaper than take-out, the kids LOVED it too! Does a recipe get much better? I think not! Hope you enjoy this Sweet Slow Cooker Sesame Chicken recipe!
Sweet Slow Cooker Sesame Chicken Recipe
- Start by seasoning chicken lightly with salt and pepper and place into crock pot.
- In a bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, onion, ketchup, oil, garlic and pepper flakes.
- Pour over chicken.
- Cook on LOW for 4 hours or on HIGH 2 hours, or just until chicken is cooked through.
- Remove chicken from crock pot with a slotted spoon, leaving sauce behind.
- Dissolve 2 teaspoons of cornstarch in 3 tablespoons of water and pour into crock pot.
- Stir to combine with sauce. Replace lid and cook sauce on HIGH for ten more minutes until the sauce has thickened.
- Shred chicken with two forks and then return to pot and toss with sauce before serving.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve over rice, quinoa, noodles or MY favorite, spinach!

Ingredients
- 3-4 boneless skinless chicken breasts

- 1/2 cup diced onion

I’ve made this before but now I can try it properly instead of thinning the soy sauce and honey super way down and skipping the ketchup. It was still delicious that way, but now Dad is off dialysis with a new kidney and we don’t have to be /as/ worried about sodium content and things like ketchup! Excited to try this again in a few hours….
I added fresh sweet red pepper and used (still) light soy sauce. And I still probably only used a half cup of honey….but I bet it will still be very very good!
Could I youse chicken thighs instead breast?

After reading in the comments I cut the honey down to about 2/3 of a cup & cut the soya sauce down a bit (for less sweet and a bit less salt) but everything else the same. I used mostly boneless skinless thighs and 1-2 breasts. Cooked on high for just under 2 hours. Did on slow cooker setting on my Instant Pot so was able to use sauté button to boil sauce to help thicken along with cornstarch.
Served over cauliflower rice mixed with long grain rice & zucchini spirals, sautéed – delicious! Will make again! 😉
The chicken turned out perfectly, and I loved your suggestion of serving it over spinach. But, the sauce was much too sweet for our tastes. I will try it again with less honey.
Sooooo good! If your sauce doesn’t thicken it’s because your crock pot doesn’t boil it enough. I put mine on a pot on the stove to finish it off on higher heat to make it boil and bubble. Came out perfect!
