A summer classic with the convenience of the crockpot
Crockpot Low Country Boil ( aka Frogmore Stew )
Nothing says summer like a Low Country Boil. It has to be one of the most fun meals to eat. The combo of corn, shrimp, potatoes and sausage are unlike any other.
You should have seen the girls’ faces when I started dumping the food onto the newspaper covered table. “Mommy!!!! What you are doing?!!! The “cool factor” of being able to eat with our hands, off of newspaper, really enticed the girls to give this new recipe a try. Score!
This Crockpot Low Country Boil is a perfect recipe to make for a group of friends this summer. So grab some newspaper, shrimp sauce , lemons, and have a blast!
NOTE: You will need a 6-7 quart crockpot for this recipe. I used a 6 quart and it was filled to the brim!
How to Make Slow Cooker Low Country Boil
- Start by spraying a 6 or 7 quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Add in water, beer, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic. Stir until well combined.
- Place potatoes, onion and celery in slow cooker and squeeze lemons over mixture in slow cooker.
- Place lemon halves to slow cooker.
- Cover the crockpot and cook on Low heat setting 4-5 hours.
- Add sausage and corn, cover and cook 2 hours longer.
- Increase heat setting to HIGH and add in your shrimp. Your crockpot will be very full, so do your best to stir a little and squeeze your shrimp in 🙂 Cover and cook 30-40 minutes or until shrimp are pink.
- Drain your Crockpot Low Country Boil using a large strainer. Serve this meal on a newspaper covered table for easy clean up. We enjoyed ours with cocktail sauce, fresh lemon and some Cajun seasoning.

This recipe looks awesome, I can wait to try it! I just recently became a follower and I’ve enjoyed all the recipes I’ve tried so far, thanks!
Corey says
Thanks Natalie! That comment made my morning 🙂 XO
Nan says
Corey – it’s just me and my husband (both senior citizens) and this makes WAY too much for us. Any chance of cutting it in half or even in third with appropriate directions?
Corey says
Could you just half the recipe and reduce the time a little. So for steps 4 & 5 ( 4. Cover the crockpot and cook on Low heat setting 4-5 hours.
5. Add sausage and corn, cover and cook 2 hours longer.) I would cook on low for 4 hours and then for step 5, cook fro 1.5 hours. I would keep the last step the same to insure the sausage and shrimp heat through. I hope that helps!
Erin says
This helps a lot! My husband and I are both in the Pacific North West but we’re originally from the south east. I’ve done country boild in pot before but this slow cooker sounds much more flavorful. Your recommendation for how to do a half batch makes a big diffrence for us, since the standard recipe would be way too much food and not cost effective for just us. Thank your for taking the time to respond to questions, it really helped me. 🙂
Carol says
I can’t wait to try this. We are having company from the south, this summer. I think this will be a perfect meal for when they are here!
Corey says
This would be the perfect meal for you company 🙂 I hope you love it!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says

Thanks Patty! I hope you love it as much as we did 🙂

Im new to this site/blogging but since my parents are from New Orleans, I saw this, it caught my attention! My dad does this from time to time and we throw in all kinds of stuff! Thanks for the post.

Corey says
Double the yumminess! I love it! hahaha
Melissa says
Have you ever added snow crab to this? My DD’s go crazy for snow crab legs. I’d love to do this for them. Looks so yummy!
Megan says
Do you think this would work with clams and mussels as well? How about some lobsters? My BF loves a seafood boil and I can’t wait to try this once it gets warmer!
Susan L. @ Full Happy Muffin and Mama says
I made this today and blogged about it as part of my Spring Cleaning New Recipe Challenge. It was awesome! I love seafood boil potatoes and corn and loved the malty-ness that beer added to the boil broth. I served the strained broth with French bread for dipping. Everyone in my family loved it…especially my three-year-old son. I really liked the addition of sausage, as well.
Corey says
YUM! What a great idea to serving bread for dipping. I am so happy everyone loved it Susan!
Sarah says
Just made this yesterday. So easy, fresh and healthy. I really enjoyed it! I wanted something light and summery and this fit the bill.
Patrice says
I would love to try this, but we don’t like kielbasa. What could I substitute, any suggestions?
Corey says
You sub in more seafood, veggies or a sausage you do like 🙂
Heather says
Made this down at the beach! Was a great easy recipe that allowed me to spend time with family rather than cooking! Also got fresh shrimp! Yummy! Thanks for the recipe!
Jennifer says
Made this over the weekend for my family. Large family so I doubled and cooked in a large electric.Turkey roaster. Turned out perfect! Added green peppers from our garden too! My kids loved it…although we did use forks, lol!
Corey says
Awesome Jennifer! I love that you added green peppers 🙂
Cynthia says
As I live in the deep south, where crawfish, shrimp, and crab boils are a weekly thing, I felt the need to mention the other veggies that boil up well with this.
Zucchini
Mushrooms
Don’t be afraid to try anything that you really enjoy. I’ve had okra boiled in this way, but have not had any success doing it myself; it tends to fall apart.
We also don’t mince or cut anything, it all goes in whole, with the peel, just a little messier to eat, lol. But there is just something special about popping an entire clove of garlic into your mouth, it’s hard to describe. I would recommend peeling the onion and garlic for the crockpot though. And if you enjoy the Cajun crawfish boil, be careful when eating the mushrooms, they always absorb the most pepper.
I’ve never considered using my crockpot for this, as we usually boil up 40+ pounds at a time, but now that my husband and I are empty-nesters, I have longed for boiled shrimp for 2, lol. I’ve got to try this soon.
Ken says
How many does your crock pot low country boil feed
Corey says
It depends if you are using it as a main or a side I guess. For a main meal, I would say 6-8.
alize says
Can u keep the soup?? Because I’m 16 n my mom wants me to cook it n I think if I keep the soup it’ll taste really good.
Jackie says
Can’t wait to try this! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Faith says
If you cook shrimp for 30 mins u will have a large problem. Shrimp should only cook about 7 mins tops.
Lenora says
Wish i would have read this first. I put the in for 30 minutes and they were waaay over cooked. it was like rubber 🙁 nearly $30 worth of shrimp INEDIBLE.
Sharon says
Okay so I skip the beer part & put broth due to my pregnancy, I also skip putting them on newpapers because newpapers has ink that is made & bacteria . . (What an actual newpaper guy tells me) meanwhile I did it on an medium pot which still works best. I love the whole dinner idea & it taste wonderful! I also add some crab legs to it, I actually had done this on my BBQ party. Everyone loved it so does my son & my little baby in my belly lol by the way im starting to crave this again !! Lol
Gerry says
Low Country is great, but it is not Cajun. It’s from the Carolinas, not Louisiana
Julie says
This was super easy and very delicious! I prepped the veggies the night before so I could throw everything in as needed the next day. (I used frozen shrimp that I thawed because that is what I had on hand, but it was still really tasty). Going to double the batch and use fresh shrimp and chorizo instead of kielbasa when our NM relatives come to visit next month, they will be over the moon! Would be very yummy with crabs too!
Corey says
I bet chorizo is going to be amazing!!! Let us know how that turns out! 🙂
Breanna says
What beer would you suggest? That looks like a PBR or maybe a Bud you’re using.
Corey says
I’m a fan of using an IPA 🙂
Maureen Whitcomb says
Thank you – I cannot wait to try this!! Question: Do you know how well leftovers would freeze?
Corey says
In my experience, the potatoes won’t freeze well, but everything else should be ok.
Marg says
I AM EXCITED TO MAKE THIS. iS IT CORRECT THAT THE SAUSAGE IS COOKED PRIOR TO PUTTING IT IN THE CROCKPOT?
Corey says
Yes, my sausage was precooked.
Maryann says
I have 8 people for dinner on monday. i read all the comments. this dinner looks exciting but i am concerned about the time on the shrimp. 30 minutes is much. i may change the meat to hot cooked sausage, and through some green, red, orange and red peppers for color along with mushrooms. i am using my largest slow cooker that can do a ham and double the recipe because they may enjoy it so much that they want seconds. I am excited because I will press a button and enjoy my company instead of being in front of the stove.
I am not a beer drinker so I do not understand the PBR or IPA beer. I have Miller lite, corrona, and Yuengling light lager left over from my july 4th party. hopefully you can comment before i make this great dish.
Corey says
Yes MaryAnn. Some folks slow cookers run hotter than others, so just watch your shrimp to make sure they don’t over cook. I would do the Yuengling light lager or the Corrona 🙂
Jan says
We love Frogmore Stew/Low Country boil. Add a red-checkered tablecloth and some Zedco music. Don’t forget small bowls for shrimp shells and wash cloths or napkin dampened with lemon water and rolled and stacked on a microwave dish. Pop them in the microwave for a few seconds and then “serve” them to your guest for cleaning their “shrimpy” hands.
Joanie Michaels says
Is it necessary to devein your shrimp? Thanks!
Corey says
I like to use deveined shrimp Joanie.
Sylvia Beyer says
I am from South Louisiana and we call our shrimp boils. Can I substitute zatarans crab boil seasoning in place of the Old Bay Seasoning? And if so , how much? Love this recipe, can’t wait to try it. Thank you.
Corey says
Yes, I am sure the seasoning would be great! I honestly have never used the zatarnas seasoning… but I am guessing a similar amount would work.
DJ says
Do you put the shrimp in thawed or frozen?
Terri says
Has anyone used a broth instead of water? If so how was it?
Greg Love says
Hi while going through the ingredients I noticed it says 1/4 cup old bay spice. Did you mean to say 1/4 tsp instead?
It sounds good otherwise. I am going to try it tomorrow!
Corey says
Nope, you read write Greg. 1/4 a cup or 4 Tablespoons. I hope you love it!
Donna says
The lemon prevented the potato from cooking. After 8 hours they were hard as rocks. Acid and veg don’t play well ina crock pot.
Corey says
That is strange Donna. 8 hours in a crockpot should have soften your potatoes.
McKenzie says
Would it still work okay if I added the sausage at the end at the same time as the shrimp?
Rebecca says
I love this! I am a fan of your crock pot barbecue chicken, lasagna soup and best beef stew ever recipes! We are in a quandry here in Anchorage as we have huge bear population this year and cannot barbecue outdoors or indoors as we could attract bears to house. I think this is what I will serve for 4th of July! It works too as the 4th will be a hot day and no a/c does anyone have up here! Your recipes are greatly appreciated! Much love to you!
Doug says
Daughter-in-law fixed this over the weekend. It was absolutely fabulous. She was unsure about adding the shrimp for 30 min. I talked her into letting me cook the shrimp in a large skillet. Put in 1 bottle of beer, kept turning shrimp and cooked until pink, then added to the pot and we ate a feast.
Cooking the shrimp with everything else in the crock pot for 30 min. is a good way to ruin good shrimp as one person has already found out and commented on. Shrimp and fish are much the same, DON’T OVERCOOK or you’ll ruin them. Makes the shrimp tough. Ours were perfect
Clint says
Hi there!!!! This will be the first time I’m attempting this. Do I need to cook the corn first? Or put it in raw?
Thank you!!!!
Corey says
You should put it in raw Clint 🙂
Clint says
Ok great!! Thanks!!!
Julie says
I made this a few years ago and it seemed to be a big hit with my family! Do you think I could get away with doing the first step with the potatoes on high for 2-2.5 hours instead of on low for 4-5? Has anyone tried this to speed up the cook time?
Ryssa H says
I will be making this this weekend and would welcome any tips you have after making it. I notice alot of people commenting on the shrimp. I bought uncooked frozen in shell shrimp should I stick to what the recipe says or cook them a different way and should I thaw them?
Corey says
I would thaw them first and then just watch them after you add them in.
