DIY Easy Fruit Fly Trap

fruit fly trap made with small bowl and cellophane

I don’t know about you, but I HATE the fruit fly.  No matter how many time I clean my fruit and veg when we get home from the market, I always seem to have several of these flies buzzing around.

What would you say if I told you that you could eliminate your fruit fly problem with a small bowl, plastic cling wrap and some apple cider vinegar? When I found out this little trick worked, I’ll tell you what I said! WHOOHOOO!!!

DIY Easy Fruit Fly Trap

  • small bowl
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (balsamic vinegar and wine work well too, but who wants to waste wine on flies 😉 hehe)
  • plastic cling wrap
  1. Fruit flies seem to be more active at night, so you will want to set your trap out at night.
  2. Place apple cider vinegar in a small bowl and cover with plastic cling wrap. Using a toothpick poke a couple small holes.
  3. Place in your kitchen (or wherever you are having the fruit fly issue)

Those little bugger won’t be able to resist the smell and will crawl into those small holes, but won’t be able to find their way out.

  1. I read about this remedy: put a cup of apple cider vinegar and a squirt I’d liquid dishwashing soap in a bowl. Flies will visit the vinegar. The soap somehow keeps them in there, where they drown. Ii’s simple, cheap, and quite effective.

  2. Thanks so much! It’s impossible to have bananas or drink juice without getting infested with these stupid things. Your tip was really easy, and I didn’t have to go out and buy anything. I made two of the traps just now, hopefully I will get good results.

  3. Tammi Hill Carter says:

    Hi,
My name is Tammi and I had the worst case of fruit flies. I heard about this idea and tried it out and it didn’t work for me at all. I had several cups around my kitchen and they were designed just like yours and I never caught one fruit fly. But when I would leave my coffee around in the kitchen with the fruit flies, I would find my coffee cup filled with them.
UMMMMM this was kind of weird.

  4. I tried this and only got a couple infested w then! Any other suggestions would be helpful I’ll jeep at it thanks

  5. This beats my carnivorous plants [Droseras]. I setup this scheme, returned 40 minutes later, caught 9 fruit flies. I’m still keeping my droseras, though.
