An all-American classic that’s easier than you think.
I love desserts – eating them and making them. I’ve got a huge repertoire of cakes, cookies, and sweet dips, but to be honest, I’ve always been a little intimidated by pies. The filling is no problem; it’s the crust that scares me. The recipes make it look so complicated, with all their super specific instructions about measurements and temperatures and technique, that I’ve never quite had the nerve to try it.
Because of this, I’ve never actually made that iconic American dessert, homemade apple pie. Yup – in the land of Mom and Apple Pie, this dessert-loving mom has never made her own apple pie. That is, until now.
I finally realized that my crust phobia wasn’t a deal-breaker. Because nowadays, you can buy pie dough right in the store, all rolled out and ready to use. All you have to make yourself is the filling, and that could hardly be easier. Just peel and slice some apples, mix them with sugar and seasonings, and add a little flour for thickener. That’s it!
So, thanks to ready-made crust, I can finally say I’ve baked my very own all-American apple pie. And if I can do it, you can. Go for it!
Recipe Tips
- This is by far the best apple peeler (affiliate link) I have used. I have purchased several cheaper ones in the past and always end up having to replace them by the end of the season. This one is sturdy.
- When I peel/core/slice/ the apples it cuts them into circles, I usually cut those in half.
- The amount of sugar added may vary based on the type of apple used. If you use Granny smith you will want to add a little more sugar.
- When picking an apple you want to use an apple a little on the firm side so they keep a good texture. Red delicious aren’t a great option because they tend to get mushy.

Homemade Apple Pie
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Spray pie plate with cooking spray. Peel, slice, and core the apples and place them in a large bowl.
- Add sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and salt and stir until apples are evenly coated.
- Place bottom crust in the pie plate and add apples. Top with remaining pie crust. Using a fork, crimp the edges together. Cut slits in the top crust.
- Rub softened butter on top of crust. Place foil or pie shield around the edges of the pie. Bake pie for 50 minutes, until top is golden and apple mixture is bubbling. Remove pie shield for the last 15 minutes of baking.

- 2 T brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- ¼ cup flour
- ⅛ t salt
- 1 T butter softened
- 2 9 ” pie crusts

Tip use a small cookie cutter…example leaf shaped instead of slits then you can place the cut out piece back on using the butter for an added touch.
