Apple pie deserves a spice mix of its own.
A year or so ago, I posted a recipe for a DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice Seasoning. This stuff was incredibly handy to have on hand — not just for pumpkin pie, but for all the various things you can add pumpkin spice to, from lattes to pancake batter.
The one thing it wasn’t so good for? Apple pie. The cloves and the hefty dose of ginger in the pumpkin pie spice are great compliments for pumpkin, but these pungent spices taste unbalanced against the sweet-tart flavor of apple pie. It needed a spice blend all its own — one based mostly on cinnamon, with an undertone of nutmeg and just a hint of allspice and ginger.
And here it is: DIY Apple Pie Spice. Like the pumpkin spice mixture, it’s super easy to make: just blend all the spices and store in a sealed container.
How can I use my homemade Apple Pice Spice?
- It’s great for just about any apple dessert you can name: baked apples, apple cake, Skillet Apple Pie Dessert Biscuits, or even my Healthy Apple Pie Smoothie. Just substitute a spoonful of this for a spoonful of plain cinnamon anywhere you want to add an extra boost of apple-pie flavor.
How do I store my homemade seasoning?
- You will want to store your homemade spice blend in an airtight container (affiliate link) in a cool dark space. If stored properly, this spice should last at least a year.
