No one seems to agree on what should go into a hot Italian sub. Sure, you definitely need ham, salami, pepperoni, peppers, and hot melted cheese – but what kind of cheese? What kind of peppers? There’s just no consensus.
Personally, I prefer provolone and a mix of roasted red peppers and banana peppers – but it’s not something I want to argue about. I’d much rather focus on something that actually makes a big difference: the bread.
You see, most people just assume you have to make this sandwich on a hoagie roll. But then you’ve got one great big sandwich that’s hard to serve. You have to sort of carve off slices for each person. Who wants to mess around with that, especially at a party?
My solution? Turn this sandwich into a batch of handy sliders. Layer all your ingredients onto slider buns, top them, brush them with that zesty Italian-seasoned melted butter, and bake.
In half an hour, you’ve got mini Italian sandwiches that you can just grab and eat with one hand. You can even dip them in marinara sauce for an extra kick.
A hot Italian sub that’s easy to serve? Now that’s something everyone can agree on.

What kind of ham are you all using? Honey or black forest?
Corey says
Either would taste great with this recipe.
Holly says
?? When you bake these in a baking dish, does the bottom roll get too soggy?
Corey says
No, not soggy. They are moist, just like any other type of slider.
Susan says
Going to make these Saturday for tailgate party. Can I use freshly sliced Roma tomatoes? If so, would you recommend placing them on before baking or after the come out of the oven?
Corey says
Sorry I just saw this Susan. If you add them before baking, make sure to dry them well to reduce moisture.

We used our store generic brand of labeled Italian seasoning.
Randy L. says
I made these for a Italian themed potluck at my work. The sliders were a hit. Everyone loved them, and, wanted the recipe. If you go with these you can’t go wrong!! I modified the recipe in that I added some herbs de providence to the butter with the Italian seasoning.
Kolby says
How did you keep them warm? Thinking about making them for a Xmas party as well! So yummy!
Corey says
I serve these right away out of the oven, but if you had a hot plate you could keep them on, that might help.
Nikki says
I loved this recipe so much! Quick and easy for busy moms. Kid friendly recipe too!
Meredith Storch says
I wasn’t sure id like these since Italian subs are usually cold, but now I never want a cold one again! Soooo good! Didn’t have sliders so I made them on brioche rolls. I used unsalted butter and added some garlic salt along with the itialian seasoning. Highly recommend! I had the peppers on the side rather than on the sandwich but I’m sure it’s great on too! I also skipped the marinara (don’t have any on hand) and it’s amazing even without it. This is going to be a go to for my household!
Diane says
We loved these. I toasted the bottoms before making sandwiches. It made them more crunchy. Delicious!
Silvie Handlirova says
Loved this recipe so much! Have made it a few times.
Are the calories per slider?

Do I have to heat the Marinara sauce
Corey says
That is a personal choice Tonni. It’s a dipping sauce, so if you prefer it warm, warm it up 🙂 Some people like it cold with the hot sandwich. 🙂
Leah E Marty says
I love this so much!. I will be making for a gal pal lunch tomorrow. So yummy 😋
Felicia says
Can’t Wait to try this, is it too sweet with the sweet rolls or is it the perfect balance?
Corey says
The salty and sweet are a perfect balance in my book 🙂
Ann-Marie Hartshorn says
I made this recipe last night. They were easy to make and super flavorful and yummy. Only change I made was using banana peppers instead of hot cherry. Will definitely be making again.

Can you make ahead and bake when ready to eat?

You would probably make this a day ahead of time, just leaving off the topping until you bake them.
