Now, don’t get me wrong…nothing beats BBQ chicken straight off the grill. BUT, the flavors of this recipe can’t be beat and you don’t have to sweat over a hot grill.

Give it a try next week and I bet you will be converted to the crockpot-side 🙂

What size slow cooker should I use?

I used a 6qt slow cooker for this recipe. You could certainly use a smaller cooker if preferred, though I would advise against using a larger one. It’s important to note that some slow cookers require a minimum fill level to prevent damage, so be sure to consult your owner’s manual beforehand.

What kind of BBQ sauce should I use?

Our go-to is Sweet Baby Rays. But any of your favorite bbq sauces will work!

What should I serve as a side with this Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Recipe?

I’ve made this recipe several times, so this speaks to its tastiness! I shred the chicken and put it over baked potatoes for “stuffed potatoes.” I use Trader Joe’s Caroline Gold BBQ sauce because it is delicious and it doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup. Personally, I find the BBQ sauce sweet enough, so I do not use the brown sugar. Delicious!

This recipe is great! I used a ‘sweet hickory’ flavoured BBQ sauce and thus only added a teaspoon of sugar. Your taste in BBQ sauce is huge in what this dish will taste like. My hubby likes things slightly spicy so I added a halved, de-seeded scotch bonnet to the pot for the first 2 hours of cooking and it gave the recipe a nice kick. I also sauteed garlic and onions and mixed them with the bbq sauce before coating chicken. A dash of chicken stock in the mix before cooking, and 4 hours later perfect meal 🙂

  3. If I am doubling the recipe…how do I adjust the time?

    1. Yes, you will want to add on about another hour Kelly.

  4. I just made this barbeque chicken this Saturday for a ladies event at my church and it was to die for !! So delicious and the perfect sweetness, not so over-powering like most sauces. I made a double recipe because I used 8 breasts and it was just perfect !!! This is a keeper for sure !! It was a big hit at the event .. by the way, I made Barbeque Chicken Sliders

    1. Thanks for sharing Mimi! I am so happy to hear you loved it :)YAY!

    2. Can you tell me what barbecue sauce you used?

I made this a few weeks ago for the family & it was a huge hit. Served it with my MIL’s coleslaw recipe and a caesar salad. I’m making it tonight for a friend in need of some help and I was going to double the recipe since she has 3 boys. Do I have to double the time in crockpot or still do high for 3-4 hours?

    1. I am so happy to hear it was a hit Kristen! No, I wouldn’t double the time for a double batch. Maybe at on another hour and then check it 🙂 I hope that helps!
