I just made this recipe, with my own spin. Instead of potatoes I used sweet potatoes in big chunks, I added some brown sugar and cinnamon, and instead of worcheshire sauce I used a Thai spicy sauce to kick up the heat.
Amazing stew, thanks for this! My Canadian family thanks you, it’s minus 27 here today.
Corey says
Brrrrr! I am so glad my stew could help warm you up!
Leigh says
I have made this recipe twice now and it’s so good.! I left out the corn and added a little rosemary and thyme to the spice mix. I also used deer tenderloin cut up in stew size pieces. It smelled so good when I came in from work. It’s nice to have a stress free dinner during this pandemic.
Bryant says
Went to a friends house last night and he served this stew. Oh My God it was great. Cant believe it was from a crock pot. Excellent
MaryAnn says
Just got this stew on, very excited to try, so glas I planned this meal for today which is another snowy, cold day in Boston!
Emma says
Hi there, opted for the low heat BUT crockpot accidentally unplugged for about 90 mins!!!! Can I turn it up in order to have it cooked on time, or should I leave it on low for an additional 90 mins?? Help!!!!
Corey says
Sorry I just saw this Emma! I would crank up the heat and make sure to test the meat before serving to make sure it is cooked all the way through.
Katrina Fox says
Can you add barley to this? Would I substitute the water with barley?
Stacy J says
making your stew tonight how much water do you add in the crock pot.
Phyllis B says
This recipe is delicious, yet very easy to make. It deserves its title!
Corey says
Thanks Phyllis!
Natalie says
Hi!
I have just two of us eating so I own a very small crock pot (2qt) can I still make this recipie? If so, how much would I cut cooking time? Thanks!
Corey says
I would still keep it close to the same time, and just half the recipe. Also, with smaller crockpots, I feel the lower setting option always works better.
Carroll Hanks says
Couple of questions; shouldn’t the meat be seared before going into the crock pot? Second, if the potatoes are put in at the beginning they will turn to mush.
Corey says
Nope, you put the meat in without searing. My potatoes have never turned to mush, so I think you should be fine 🙂
Josh says
Great recipe, thank you! Made this yesterday and it was a great, hearty meal!
Corey says
I a so happy you loved it Josh! Thanks for stopping by!
Rob says
Have my buddies over for the Daytona 500 today made your stew every single person went for seconds thanks this is a keeper!
Corey says
Yay! Thank you so much for sharing Rob 🙂

After scouring the internet super-highway for beef stew recipes that seemed to fall flat, I came across this one. The corn & peas looked like a nice addition to other recipes I had seen. After reading the reviews I decided to try out the 10 hour recipe.
Some people mentioned something about spice, I didn’t notice any. But what I did notice is a truly delicious meal. Hearty, wonderful flavor, the veggies were tender but not mushy, every chunk of beef like a prize for my mouth. The corn added a nice crunch and color to the dish. I’m a picky eater, so this is a great way for me to get my veggies.
It’s a lot of food though. It probably took me 3-4 days eating it twice a day to polish this beast off. You know it’s damn good when you’re not sick of the recipe after eating it that much. Bravo!
Jon says
Is it the end of the world if i dont have any tomatoe paste??
Corey says
Hahaha. No Jon. You do need a tomato-ish ingredient. What do you have on hand?
Paula says
I have made this 3 times, and it is so good…I am not a fan of beef stew but this has turned me around. I am making it again today and realized I didnt have tomato paste but I did have a can of diced tomatoes. I blended the tomatoes, smimmered in a small pot for about 10 minutes, strained the water out of the “paste” and added it to the crock pot with everything else. Im sure it will be just as good, and it’s a great substitution when you are in a pinch.
Corey says
LOVE this tip Paula! Thanks!!!
sherri p. says
This is so simple, can not wait to try it. This stew smells amazing.
Sloane says
So I rarely comment on food blogs but I made this a few weeks ago and my husband raved about it so I thought I’d come back and leave a comment. My husband will eat whatever I make but rarely is fully pleased (he’s hard to please when it comes to cooking) although he always has a good attitude about it. But he loved this dish. And now I’m making it for when his potential boss comes over for dinner because he liked it that much. You really won’t be disappointed with this recipe!
Corey says
This comment made my day! Thank you so much for the amazing compliment!!
Terri says
I’m afraid I didn’t like this stew. The addition of one can of tomato paste made the broth too tangy and it was too soupy for my taste.
Corey says
Sorry to hear that Terri.
Cory says
This is the second time I am making this recipe!! Everyone loves it!! I can smell it throughout my house already!! Thanks so much for the awesome recipe!! 🙂
Corey says
Excellent Cory! (nice name 😉 hehe) I am so glad to hear how much you love my recipe 🙂 Thanks!
Cory says
Thanks Corey!! Great name!! I always send it to work with my mister with enough to share and he eats it all!! We love it 🙂
lora says

Nicki says
Hey Corey
This was DELISH.
I put on a few pounds with the dunking of the bread.
Corey says
Hahaha. Mmmmmm bread and stew 🙂 I am so glad you loved it!
Kyle Walker says
About to make my first ever Stew!!! This recipe looks like the best bet, based on the comments. Can’t wait to try it tonight. A cold snowy day in Alberta.
Noelle says
Love this! I used a stock I’d made with onion, garlic, celery, and pepper scraps I made in the crock pot the night before. Added a tiny bit of corn starch to the flour because Mr. Man likes his gravy really thick. It was wonderful!
Tonight I’m turning the leftovers into shepherd pie!
Corey says
Sounds great Noelle!
Christina says
Delicious! I will absolutely make this recipe again:-)
Carrie says
It the middle of July, but we thoroughly enjoyed this today! Thank you for the recipe.
Ashley says
Amazing recipe! I made it for my dad after his surgery and he was so impressed and happy 🙂 I have since made this stew and it makes the whole house smell delicious all day long! Thanks for sharing this!
Corey says
Wonderful Ashley! Thank you so much for stopping by to let me know!
Pare Perez says
Thank You Corey for the recipe, I have never made a stew in my crockpot before so decided to give your recipe a go. I’ve reread the recipe and realised I should of put corn and peas in towards the end, will it still turn out ok?
Corey says
Yes, you should be fine. The peas just might be a little “mushy”, but not a big deal 🙂
jay says
would be great to have those measurements in the global standard of metric
Kim says
Came out yummy!
Chad says
Simply amazing, we are eating it now and the whole family loves it. Thanks for sharing.
Patty says
I do not have a crock pot. It just slipped through my hands after I washed it and it completely cracked. Can I make this another way? In the oven perhaps?
Monique says
Great recipe! I actually left it in soup form & it came out amazing! Thank you!
DW says
Made this today. It is a bit spicy, can’t quite put my finger on what caused it. But it was so easy and still tasted good so we’ll make it again.
MW says
Just made this tonight and it was a big hit. I used fresh parsley vice dried as I had some left from another recipe. Everything else was as listed in the reci
Catherine says
Followed the recipe exactly and it was really sweet. Not sure why. I’m going back to the seasoning packets.
Corey says
What kind of meat did you use? Some cuts of meat do taste sweeter than others 🙂 I hope that helps 🙂
Mallory A says
Wow!!!! I’ve been looking at a lot of recipes that are easy and have lots of good reviews and stumbles across this one, It was my first time making a stew and let me say, it was the best stew I’ve ever had!!!!! I followed everything except for the peas (we hate peas) and it was amazing! So easy and the meat was sooo tender!!! Thanks so much for sharing this, I will be making this all the time.
Corey says
YAY Mallory. Thank you for sharing! I am so happy you loved it 🙂
Victoria says
Do you think this can be frozen before put into the crock pot and still turn out as good as the reviews are saying it is? I’m going camping and am planning on taking a bunch of frozen meals and would LOVE to take this.
Dee says
I had a calling for beef stew. My mom use to make when I was in elementary school, I googled found this recipe, looked easy , so I bought a crock pot and the ingrediants. It is cooking now, it was so easy. Can’t wait to taste
SGR says
Hi. It looks and sounds delicious but wondering how I could adjust for a 4 quart slow cooker. It’s just two of us and a toddler. I’d love to try it.
Sara says
I made this beef stew recipe today for the first time and it was delicious!!! My husband complimented me several times. I am so happy I made something that he loves. Thanks for sharing this recipe. I did brown the meat before putting it in the crock pot but it was a pain so next time I will skip that step.
Corey says
Thanks Sara! Yeah, there is no need to brown before with this recipe 🙂
Robert Neville says
Making it today down here in Colombia – using fresh, locally grown veges and beef! It has about 6-7 hours to go…smells great so far and I do believe it’s going to be a great one!
Kristen says
My husband too, loved this more than what I normally make day to day.
I added mushroom to it instead of corn. And didn’t even mess with the whole flower bit. It was perfect anyway 🙂
Kristen says
Oh and we put it over egg noodles!
amy says
i made this last night and when i tasted it this morning, it was almost bitter or too tomatoey. Any advice of how to fix it?
Lisa says
This stew was good but all I could taste was Worcester sauce. It was so tangy. 2 tablespoons right?
Kymora says
Some say it was spicy..,. I’ll added 4 jalapeno in mine. I sure love it spicy. By the way , the picture in the pintrest had some bay leaf, but not in the ingredient. Does bay leaf need to be added?
Corey says
No bay leaf in this one Kymora 🙂
Cathryn says
For those who love barley, remember it swells to 6 or 7 times it’s original size. I cook mine in the microwave and add water or stock as necessary, but don’t add salt! If you added the barley directly to the stew, the other ingredients would be way overcooked by the time the barley was fully cooked.
Shanti says
I made this tonight and it’s definitely a keeper. I know why they call it the best crockpot beef stew. I followed the directions as is… came out yummy, my 20 month old likes it and my teenage son asked for seconds. Makes me feel wife material LOL. Here is a pic of my masterpiece: http://tinyurl.com/ldx8rqr
Corey says
YUM! Looks great Shanti! I am so happy everyone loved it!
Carol Greenway says
The beef stew had a delicious taste, but, even after cooking in a Crockpot over high heat for the recommended time, the meat, carrots and potatoes were not fall-apart tender. Next time I will cut the meat, baby carrots, and potatoes into much smaller pieces and proceed from there. We will definitely make the recipe again! Thanks for a great comfort food recipe.
Tara says
Do you think this could be made ahead of time and froze (freezer crock pot meal)? Wasn’t sure with the celery.
Corey says
I have not done this yet, but would love to hear if anyone else has.
christina says
wow!! You arent kidding when u say it is the BEST! So glad i found this recipe on Pinterest when looking for a beef stew recipe. Never made Stew in my crockpot before and this was amazing!!! I followed the recipe as it except i omitted the oregano as im not a huge fan. This will be a staple in my cookbook now. Thanks for sharing!
Corey says
So happy to hear you loved it Christina!
Ang says
This was super delicious but on the spicy side for me and my family. Has anyone else had this problem? Do you think it was the pepper that caused this? Nothing else spicy really went in…thanks!
Corey says
Maybe the pepper or the Worcestershire sauce. Some people can find that to be a little spicy. But others don’t think so. That’s the only thing I could think of. You could try leaving out the pepper and using soy sauce instead of Worcestershire. I hope that helps 🙂
Traci says
I have everything I need except beef broth and I really want to make a big batch for the game at noon tomorrow. Not leaving time to get more groceries. Can I use beef boullion cubes do you think? This sounds delicious!!!!!!
Corey says
Yes, just use the equivalence of bouillon cubes and water.
Kara says
I made this yesterday morning, let it simmer and cook for a full ten hours. This recipe was perfect for a hint of rain Fall Sunday. I was exhausted coming back from the Pumpkin Patch and glad I had this cooking in my crock pot. My husband’s only complaint was the celery wasn’t diced! He loved it. My son ate it all(he doesn’t like onions or celery) and didn’t know they were in there! I paired it with Sister Schubert’s Dinner Yeast Rolls. A nice sweet roll that went well with the stew. I wanted to add mashed potatoes but was too hungry I forgot. My only thing I will change is the amount of Worcestershire sauce by halving it because it was too spicy for me. This recipe is a keeper! I found it on pinterest.
