Perfect hash browns every time!
I’m no stranger at using my waffle iron for other things than waffles. Our two favorites are waffle pizza dippers and waffle iron cinnamon rolls. I had seen people on Pinterest trying out hash browns so I thought I would give it a whirl!
Bagged hash browns didn’t work out so well in my opinion. Turned out dry and seem to burn too easily. BUT tater tots worked PERFECTLY!!! They have a nice crispy outside with a tender middle. YUM!
NOTE: The frozen tater tots have to be partially thawed before going in to waffle iron. So as soon as I get up in the morning, I’ll grab the bag out of the fridge and let it sit out while I get the morning coffee brewing. After I enjoy my first cup, the tots are ready to rock!
Waffle Iron Hash Brown Tater Tots
NOTE: Serving size and and quantities of waffles will vary based on the size of your waffle iron. Mine 7 inch iron made 4 waffles, which is 8 servings.
- Set waffle iron to medium /high. Wait until iron indicates it is ready to go and spray with non-stick stray or coat with oil. Set tater tots evenly on waffle iron. My iron measures 7 inches across and I used about 22 tots per waffle.
- Close iron and press down firmly to flatten out the tots a little. While they cook, you press down more and more as they continue to cook. Total cooking time is about 2-3 minutes depending on your waffle iron.
- When done, season with salt and or pepper to taste. Serve these Waffle Iron Hash Brown Tater Tots with your favorite breakfast eggs and some fruit for a fun, filling breakfast!

Hi Corey, I love your website. Can i use mini tater tots in waffle iron?
Corey says
I don’t see why not 🙂 Just use a couple more to fill up your waffle iron 🙂

Scramble 2 eggs… get your iron ready, spray it, and add a handful of chopped tomatoes, peppers and onions… close the iron and let it cook for a minute. Open it back up, and add the eggs. Let cook for 3 minutes on medium, and you’ll have a perfect omelette! Add a little cheese, and fold it over… SO good. Would go perfect with the hash browns!

This was fun and easy. Thanks for being here when I needed you. 🙂 I was pretty sure I had the concept figured out, but your directions made it fast and easy. My family REALLY enjoyed heart-shaped tater-waffles for V-day breakfast.
Corey says
I’m so happy your family loved them! Happy V-Day!

This article don’t lie! 3 to 3.5 minutes, I couldn’ believe they cooked so fast! After squishing them down at first, I locked my Waffle Iron down. Tater Tots are cheaper than loose frozen hash browns too. They are indeed- some of the best hash browns I ever ate! These are not quite like McDonalds hash browns, they are soft inside and crispness is just wonderful.
Corey says
I am so glad you loved them as much as we do David!
Hilary says
Do you put them in frozen?
Lynne says
Use FROZEN tator tots, correct? Thanks.
Corey says
Yes, but as I stated in the direction….”NOTE: The frozen tater tots have to be partially thawed before going in to waffle iron. So as soon as I get up in the morning, I’ll grab the bag out of the fridge and let it sit out while I get the morning coffee brewing. After I enjoy my first cup, the tots are ready to rock!”
I hope that helps 🙂

want to make them even better? Try putting french fried onions on them. Also, I thaw them using the microwave defrost setting.
Corey says
Yummy idea!!!
Candice says
Made this for a quick brunch option today, I made the tots, then cracked an egg over them and added cheese and salsa – added a side of fruit. So Yummy, Quick, Easy and didn’t have to heat up the kitchen.
Thanks! Candice

Mine didn’t come out as well and I broke my waffle iron pressing down on them. Oops! They were tasty, though.
