Now, don’t get me wrong…nothing beats BBQ chicken straight off the grill. BUT, the flavors of this recipe can’t be beat and you don’t have to sweat over a hot grill.

Give it a try next week and I bet you will be converted to the crockpot-side 🙂

What size slow cooker should I use?

I used a 6qt slow cooker for this recipe. You could certainly use a smaller cooker if preferred, though I would advise against using a larger one. It’s important to note that some slow cookers require a minimum fill level to prevent damage, so be sure to consult your owner’s manual beforehand.

What kind of BBQ sauce should I use?

Our go-to is Sweet Baby Rays. But any of your favorite bbq sauces will work!

What should I serve as a side with this Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Recipe?

Some of our favorites are mac and cheese, potato salad, pasta salad, or cowboy caviar.

  1. Hello,

I made this tonight. Made my house smell so good, but when went to shred it after four hours the chicken would barely shred and the sauce was so watery. I followed the directions step by step. Do you know why this would happen? Thanks!

    1. That is strange Heather. When you say it wouldn’t shred, was it not cooked all the way through? Maybe your crockpot runs colder than others?

I’m making this tomorrow but with 6lbs of chicken breast. What do you suggest for cooking time?

    1. For that much, I would increase the cooking time for at least another hour. It really depends on the size of your slow cooker and how hot it runs.

Have you tried cooking more than 2 lbs at a time? I love this recipe and have made it several times, but was going to serve it at a party for 30. Wondering if the cook time needs to be longer and if so, how much longer? I was planning on tripling the recipe. Suggestions?

    1. Yes Diane. I cannot say for sure as all crockpots run at different temps, but for tripling the recipes, I would add on about an hour. Just make sure to give yourself a little extra time, and it if finishes early, just keep it on the warm setting.

    2. I made 6lbs and cooked on low for 8 hours and it turned out great! Everyone loved it!

Hello! I have a 3 quart crockpot (and am new to making crockpot dishes) do you have any recommendations on how to adjust the amounts to fit in that size crockpot? Or do you think this recipe will fit in a crockpot that size? Any information would be helpful! Thank you!

    1. It should fit Katie, you might just need to cook it a little longer.

  5. I will need to start this before I leave for work in the morning. It will be longer than 4 hours until I get back home. Would you suggest putting it on low since it will be about 5.5/6 hours until I am able to get home? or just wait for a day when I will be around?

    Thank you!

    1. If you are going to do it longer than 4 hours, I would possibly do a double batch. Or, use the time on your slow-cooker if you have one? Some will just switch over to a warm setting after the cook time is over. 6 hours on low, might just be a little too long.
